DESIGN NAME: Promenade
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Building
INSPIRATION: The main objective in the design of Promenade was to create a project that could signify a green landmark in the city, a symbol of nature and health, aiming to enrich the city, and to improve the quality of life of its residents, thanks to the strong connection of the building with nature.
For the design, the Architects got inspired by nature.
Promenade has a Biophilic Design in which greenery is the protagonist.
The design enhance the sensorial experience of the greenery, integrating the plant landscape with the architecture dimension.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Promenade is a building designed for a new format of architecture, which focuses on encouraging the relationship between citizens and nature, and on achieving the goal of improving residents health and well being.
The design incorporates nature as a need to improve the environment in cities and as an immense opportunity to improve citizens quality of life.
Promenades design, which connects humans, architecture, nature and the city, proposes a new design paradigm for Uruguay, in which vegetation and living nature must be considered constituent elements of architectural language
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design of the building aims to facilitate an urban and sustainable way of living.
A main mission in this project was to promote a healthier lifestyle. Each resident has got a private green terrace, and a vegetable garden area in the rooftop of the building. Encouraging residents to grow their own food, and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
Residents interaction is encouraged with social spaces. Both the garden and the rooftop terrace, have the mission of encouraging residents to socialize. They are dynamic spaces created to enjoy nature and social activities
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2022 and is Under Construction, it will be finished in 2024. It is located in Punta del Este, Uruguay.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Promenade’s architecture is defined on the one hand by the simplicity and elegance of glazing, black aluminium and wood, and on the other hand, by the biophilic design and the connection with nature.
There are two elements that most define Promenade’s architecture: Glass and Greenery. Glass is an important part of the essence of the building, as the whole facades have been design with floor to ceiling glazing.
And greenery is the element that defines Promenade’s identity.
Light, transparency and greenery, are main concepts of the design.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Promenade is a 10 story building, with eight floors destined to the 54 apartments, a ground floor that features the hall of the building, several amenities, and some commercial premises, and a rooftop terrace with a community garden and several vegetable gardens.
The development includes one, two, and three bedroom apartments, and they all have terraces with pots that are an essential element of the facade and that house native plants and trees.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design seeks to create a healthy architecture. Applied Research was the type of research conducted by the studio with the objective to find the ways in which architecture can enhance human health and well being. The research used a multi method approach to data analysis, including systematic mapping study, structured review and thematic analysis. The research was done with the awareness of the importance of the role buildings can play in human health and well-being, with the objective of creating spaces that enhance physical, mental and social health.
CHALLENGE: In the design of Promenade, the main challenge was to create a building that could really enhance resident’s health and well-being. To create an architecture that could ¨nourish¨ , promoting the possibility of a healthier diet by the production of homegrown food; offering excellent quality of air, water and light; promoting residents to have contact with nature, to exercise, to socialize; designing spaces that inspire, spaces to connect with others and also with themselves, and spaces that can facilitate a good night’s sleep; promoting a healthier lifestyle.
