DESIGN NAME: S1 20 Inch Cabin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Modular Carbon Fiber Suitcase
INSPIRATION: The pandemic has caused dramatic changes in our lives, and we will have to continue to adapt to the turbulent changes. The transparent window design of the shoe compartment is inspired by the space capsule; in the boundless universe, the pace of human exploration will never stop. We want to use the "space capsule" element to encourage or remind people to try new things and look further ahead.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: S1 20 Inch Cabin represents innovation by solving the problem that suitcases can’t be repaired by customers themselves. The modular design allows customers to replace and fix the damaged wheels, shells, and other parts with provided tools instead of throwing the suitcase away.
In addition, the specific shoe compartment makes shoe packing effortless and hygienic and keeps those shoes in good condition along the journey. And molecular recycling technology is applied to make recyclable carbon fiber composite materials and circular technology to promote sustainable design so that a closed loop production system is possible.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: S1 has separate compartments including a shoe compartment that keeps your shoes in good condition and allows you to conveniently change shoes during the trip. Every external shell, lining, and all wheels are detachable for easy repair or replacement. The interior folio holds your laptop or tablet and can be quickly taken out for security checks. The TSA lock ensures that your belongings are safe. There are three tucked-in and flushed pull handles to support easy lifting anytime.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was conceptualized in 2022 and the initial product prototype was made in October 2022; it will be launched in 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: S1 has a hard shell made of magnesium alloy and covered by carbon fiber with a water- and dust-resistant shoe compartment. The suitcase will be assembled by hand piece by piece, like cars. The telescopic handle is made using metal. And its modular structure allows for easy repair and replacement.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Some of our designers and product managers are regular business travelers. They noticed that most luggage nowadays look and work alike. And if a small part is damaged, the luggage becomes useless, which is definitely not good for the environment and doesn’t meet people’s demand for a sustainable lifestyle. So they visited some luggage factories, did tons of marketing research, and came up with modular luggage.
CHALLENGE: The biggest challenges we encountered were how to make the suitcase modular to the greatest extent and how to combine different materials seamlessly. We had to ensure that those parts are tightly fixed together and can be easily removable and replaced. We spent a lot of time and effort working with other companies to develop molecular recycling technology to create recyclable carbon fiber. And we tried many processes to reduce the weight of the metal frame without compromising durability.
