DESIGN NAME: Villa Madonna
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel Extension
INSPIRATION: The main inspiration was determined by the orientation toward the summit of the Sciliar mountain range. The axis identified in this way determines the alignment of the main façade of the intent space with the goal of capturing the view of the peak. From an architectural point of view, the intervention relates to the existing building by interpreting the basic compositional role using only technical materials that would, however, resume the logic of tradition in mountain buildings.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The morphology of the extension was determined by the purpose of identifying meaningful relationships with the natural context. This approach has allowed the adoption of an architecture that, while strongly differentiating stylistically and linguistically, manages to converse harmoniously with the more traditional character of the building to which it is juxtaposed.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The new extension is integrated into the existing architectural context through a new re-functionalization of spaces.
The recepion, a refreshment area, and different reading-conversation rooms were included in this new shell.
Light and views of the outdoor space filter into the interior through physical discretizations of the infills without affecting the perception of their material continuity over the entire perimeter of the extension.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Built in 2021, Alpe di Siusi, Italy
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The criteria that governed the choice of materials was to use technical materials that would ensure durability and high energy performance, which, however, would take up the logic of tradition in mountain buildings: stone, glass and wood.
All materials used come from a supply chain with low carbon dioxide production.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research was done by observing the surrounding area and bringing back into the architecture itself the lines that make up the surrounding landscape.
Light was used as a natural element of intersection and connection between interior and exterior, thus generating an architecture that could fit in and become a homogeneous part of the landscape.
CHALLENGE: The most complex part was to design a building envelope that would integrate with the pre-existing landscape and 'hotel, but at the same time could take on with new architectural significance.
