DESIGN NAME: The Shaded House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Individual Residential Home
INSPIRATION: It is a nature inspired design. Trees are called the self-shading elements which provide the cool breeze to the person sitting under the tree even in the hot summer. Similarly, the house is designed in such a way that it can be called a self-shading structure which protects the user from harsh rays of sun throughout the day. Moreover, the focus was on creating a design in such a way that natural air passes through the house and keeps the home refreshing at all times.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Continuing the stark of minimalistic style of modern architecture, the Shaded House incorporates the Indian-Modern aesthetics replete with modern amenities. The blend and application of materials, size of openings, placement of balconies, all have been designed by keeping the local climate at the core of the design and making a self-sustainable and maintenance-free house.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The layout of the house is uncomplicated and flows naturally from common to private activities. The front garden acts as a source of light and ventilation for the ground floor. With the intention of allowing an influx of natural light, large windows have been installed throughout the house. First floor passage leads to 3 bedrooms and overlooks the dining and puja. The second level encompasses the entertainment room and a huge shaded terrace garden. The terrace garden to the south east facade elevates in the front, visually connecting all three levels. The screening in the ceiling brings a sense of ornamentation to the house.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project is located in the Paldi area of Ahmedabad Gujarat. The project started in mid of 2018 and in the span of 2.5 years it got the final touch by 2021.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Created out of brick and concrete, the facade of the house is expressive and creates a self-shading structure and thus provides thermal comfort to the users. The elevated gardens on the south east are created out of grey cubes-clad with wooden figured MCM while the walls look astonishing with brick cladding giving it a modern look inspired by tradition and socialism. The large white frame with screening in the ceiling acts as an enclosure to the form of the house. This helps to cut out harsh sunlight entering into the interior spaces by creating a magical play of light and shadow.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The brief from the client side was to create an open and spacious 4-bedroom house which is well-lit and naturally ventilated, while ensuring the privacy of spaces. Also, the client required a spacious living room, family room, dining, kitchen, puja room, entertainment room and a lift with staircase for vertical transition. Considering all the above factors and the satisfaction of the client in mind the design of the house was done in the plot size of 45 feet X 90 feet.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: While designing this Bungalow we studied the traditional systems of planning fetching more light and ventilation. We also studied the advantages of cutouts with the help of software which gave us statistics that how much light we were able to fetch and how to use more natural light and less artificial lights. Also, with the help of simulations we studied the wind diagrams and planned the structure accordingly.
CHALLENGE: The Shaded House in Ahmedabad has a plot size of 45ft by 90ft and is enclosed with 2 to 4 Storey structures on 3 sides. The sole permissible frontage the only means for natural light, aeration and establishing visual connections with nature and outdoors was just 27ft. The road in the front is the only open frontage for the site. Accommodating all the requirements of the client and considering the surrounding climate to provide shade in all the areas these factors were challenging for the Architect. The key element while designing was to develop a bright space with happy energy.
