DESIGN NAME: Le's House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: Different from a general purpose villa which features equal-width parallel floors stacking upon one another, this project is unique in that it features staggered floors standing opposed to one another, rendering a panoramic angle of view other than the vertical facet within a certain height, seasoning the experience of the space users. The girdled spatial staircases standing at the center of the house connecting each floor serves a vital, metaphorical and pivotal function.Different from a general purpose villa which features equal-width parallel floors stacking upon one another, this project is unique in that it features staggered floors standing opposed to one another, rendering a panoramic angle of view other than the vertical facet within a certain height, seasoning the experience of the space users. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This 86-square-meter multi-story residence was renovated to provide an elderly-friendly living space with a warm, cozy and bright atmosphere. The Client wanted to enhance the connection between family members, and so the 'less-is-more039; approach was adopted, featuring a streamlined art decor and low-chroma and health-friendly materials to create a carefree and natural touch.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This project distinguishes between public spaces and private spaces: When entering through the front door, a tall shoe cabinet stands at the shoe-wearing area at the porch, which is properly separated from the dining room and the living room by a sliding door standing in between, blocking direct view into the house. When closed, the sliding door joins the kitchen entrance to form a consecutive facet of the wood-looking wall, a natural view to appreciate from the dining room. The public spaces for families are comprised of a living room, a dining room, a window-side leisure area and an independent kitchen. The spatial staircases act as the center of flows, connecting the three stories which host a master bedroom, one piano room, one storage room, two children’s bedrooms and two bathrooms. Such a layout is so thoughtful that it allows intimate interactions among parents and children while providing spaces for being alone.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project finished in Oct. 2020 in Taipei City, Taiwan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The house is furnished mainly with natural woody colors that are inclusive and skin-friendly, supplemented by light gray stucco and soft white coating, which mediate the base and profile, giving modern aesthetics that feature sophistication and details of simplicity. Then comes the ingenuity of the storage space underneath the treads of staircases which can be pulled or lifted open, utilizing every inch within the spatial staircases.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The light spatial staircases at the junction of the three floors are a highlight of function and the center of attraction. It has a starter step horizontal with the low TV stand adjacent to the TV wall and, after ascending and winding through it, leads to a lounge area where a sliding door stands and a plain white gauze curtain hangs, the exercise area and sunshine garden of the host. At the entrance of the staircases, a piece of soft white block-out curtain is summoned to offer privacy for the piano area that is usually separated by a partition wall.
CHALLENGE: The unique layout of the house was the focus of this project, with special attention being paid to the indoor spatial staircase. After careful consideration, metal handrails were chosen to marry wooden steps to build the cylinder-shaped staircase, ensuring that it was slim, space-saving, safe and stable, and had a smooth flow and great design sense.
