DESIGN NAME: All Day Place Shibuya
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel
INSPIRATION: Due to the limitations brought about by Coronavirus Pandemic, the project members had to re-assess the true value of travel. They decided to create a universal and comfortable "usual place" in Shibuya with a people-focused design. Additionally, they decided to provide a place for travelers to get a taste of Shibuya from the locals' perspective. The idea is for locals to grab a coffee or enjoy a beer while waiting for friends, while simultaneously allowing travelers to discover hidden gems in the city.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: "all day place shibuya" is a hotel located in Shibuya, the bustling icon of modern Japanese culture. The concept is "a place where all can gather," encouraging mingling between both locals and travelers alike. The ground floor area doubles as a hub for people to gather and as a coffee shop and beer bar, find the hotel reception and lobby on the building's second floor alongside its restaurant, where large, glass windows allow a flood of natural light and view of the neighboring park.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Not only between locals and travellers, however, the hotel also connects the ages. Shibuya has always been a city where culture has been transmitted. The city is also where people of all ages, whether in their 20s or 40s, can drop by on a whim. To cover those age needs, the hotel provides a wide range of room types; compact rooms for business, big king beds for youth groups, and wide beds for families and couples. With the wide range of ages, the hotel also welcomes adults who spent their youth in Shibuya.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2017 in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, and began operation on April 27, 2022. Shibuya is one of Tokyo's most busy and colorful districts, packed with shopping and dining, as well as nightclubs, serving a wide demographic of people every day. Shibuya is a fashion and culture center, and its streets are the birthplace of many of Japan's fashion and entertainment trends. Over a dozen major department store branches can be found around the area catering to all shoppers.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A key visual feature at the hotel is the square tiling in a stunning gradient of various greens, connecting the outdoor seating area and ground facilities to internal stairs leading to the restaurant and reception. The hotel is designed from the viewpoint of 'using ordinary and familiar materials in extraordinary and familiar ways'. For example, in guest rooms, media consoles and bed frames were built with forest green melamine plywood, which is rarely used for hotel furniture and can look or feel cheap if used in an untasteful way.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Inspired by the historic role "public houses" have in the community overseas in European countries and the United States, the project members centered their research around designing a spot that not only caters to guests who will stay the night, but also locals and travelers who stop by for food and drink. The intention is to create a place allowing all visitors to enjoy the "richness of travel" by encouraging communication between locals and tourists alike.
CHALLENGE: The hotel strives to adopt an environmentally-friendly operational approach by using sustainable materials for both construction and amenities offered to guests, as well as choosing renewable energy sources. In addition, the hotel installed a competitive property management system and self check-in kiosks that vastly reduce the staff's idle time and allows them to better serve guests. Finally, the original radio channel with staff-provided reports on travel, the hotel, and Shibuya life offers an exclusive peek into Shibuya life.
