DESIGN NAME: Ohv
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Showflat
INSPIRATION: As a showflat, the project had to be highly functional and aspirational for prospective buyers to envision their lives in the space. Family life was at the core of all the decisions and was used as the point of departure for design exploration. Japanese and Scandinavian influences are used for their calming effects on the space. Located above a bustling neighbourhood, it helps to bring a certain peace to emphasize the fact that home should be, first and foremost, a place to unwind and relax.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is a 3-bedroom condominium showflat. It was designed to showcase a home for a young family and features many family-friendly features to help foster closer ties while giving each person the space they need to work, play and grow as an individual. The design aims to promote a strong, healthy family and mental well-being for all at home, especially since the pandemic when more time is spent at home.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The apartment layout was changed to include open spaces to reduce "cabin fever" from being home for long periods. Family-friendly features throughout the unit include a raised platform that both segments the spaces and brings the child and taller parent closer, and see-through walls that allow parents to watch children. Quiet places were included for adults to take a break and for children to develop independently. These include a coffee bar in the kitchen and cosy alcoves for children to play.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2020 during the pandemic and was completed in October 2021. The project is located in Singapore.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Though customised, all the built-in carpentry was designed to be cost-efficient. Materials chosen are readily available in the local market and design details are easily fabricated without any special equipment needed. They are also durable and withstand the wear and tear that a family with children would put the apartment through. For example, high-pressure laminates are used instead of veneer. As far as possible, and where it does not affect the design intent, the existing finishes and fittings were retained. This helps to keep the interior as sustainable as possible with minimal wastage generated.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We referred to a survey conducted by Sekisui House Human Life R&D Institute on the effects of staying at home during the pandemic for insights which helped in our design.
Our design includes solutions to 5 points suggested in the study to improve happiness at home. Coexistence and balance to reduce the burden of housework on women; ideas to easily create an office space at home; using greenery to reduce stress; simple ways to create personal space; multiple learning areas for children’s learning.
