DESIGN NAME: Cardona Cabin
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Timber Building
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this project and building was to showcase how the reduction of carbon footprint can be achieved when building premium homes and structures, as a result of thinking differently. The design inspiration of the building's gable form is derived from the Central Otago stone shed, though the traditional appearance has been abstracted.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This building is a showcase of what can be achieved when thinking differently about the built environment. Cardrona Cabin has been designed to inspire others and is a chapel to craft inside and out with timbers sourced from rapidly renewable FSC certified New Zealand plantation timbers that help to mitigate climate change by absorbing vast amounts of carbon, instead of using slow grown, imported timbers usually used to build premium homes and structures. Demonstrating this, over 9 tonnes of carbon is stored from the Vulcan timber elements alone used in Cardrona Cabin.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Elements that normally communicate building scale are absent. Built from the inside out, windows are screened from the outside obstructing the normal living areas one expects to find in a residential house. Sited in an alpine environment the building demonstrates the Abodo range of thermally modified timber products in practice ranging from cladding, structure, linings, flooring, fenestration to joinery.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The building demonstrates the Abodo timber range using state-of-the-art thermal modification and grain orientation technology. The form is presented as a monolith of rigorously set-out battened timber, floating on a recessed piled foundation. Slight variations in the batten spacings signify windows, a single street-side door is sheltered by a steel arch. In contrast to the restrained exterior materiality, the interior structure and surfaces are a rich articulation of New Zealand builders craft.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Facade and Roof is Abodo Vulcan timber screening finished in Sioox, a silicate based wood finish designed to silver off. Structure is Abodo Vulcan timber in exposed studs and rafters in raw finish combined with exposed steel portals. Interiors are Abodo Vulcan Panelling TG9 raw finish. Flooring is Abodo Thermally Modified Silver Beech finished in Whittle Evolution hard wax oil. Entry Platform is Vulcan board formed concrete with bush hammer finish. Kitchen is Abodo Vulcan facings, with Abodo Thermally Modified Silver Beech bench top, finished in Rubio Monocoat Intense Black.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The building is very small and well oriented with heavily shaded glazing. The design has quite a high form factor of 3.9 (form factor is surface area divided by the useful floor area). The Cardrona Cabin spec design performs significantly better than New Zealand building code in terms of heating requirements. Over 9 tonnes of carbon is stored in the Vulcan timber elements alone, dramatically offsetting the small amounts of concrete and structural steel used in the building.
CHALLENGE: Using a rainscreen system around the building was one of the biggest challenges for this building as it needed to be custom designed. It was important to the incorporate this into the design to showcase rainscreen cladding as it provides a sustainable and efficient way to bring a sleek timber facade to any project.
