| DESIGN NAME: Link PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Desk INSPIRATION: The pandemic has changed the ways of working since video conferences and online meetings became an important part of our lives. Link is designed to create an aesthetic, fun, ergonomic and orderly working space for people by responding to their personal and professional needs when connecting to their works and to the world from the comfort of their home. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Link is a multi-functional desk for home offices, offering ergonomic and aesthetic solutions. Link has a curved shell design to create three storage areas beneath its surface. The shell widens from the front to the back to create a spacious legroom. The middle section is designed with an adjustable angle to offer an ergonomic solution. It has two adjustable desk lamps that can be used as studio lighting in video conferences. Link has two integrated speakers to offer a fun working environment. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The curved shell design of Link creates three different storage areas to contain personal and professional belongings, which results in an orderly working space. The adjustable desk surface offers an ergonomic solution to working long hours by allowing easy adjustment of the laptop height. The desk lamps are adjustable and can be used as studio lighting in video conferences or online meetings. Integrated bluetooth speakers create a better video conference or online meeting experience. They also create a fun environment when watching videos or listening to music. Power outlets offer easy charging of various electronics. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Link was designed in 2021 due to the increased hours spent working from home following the pandemic. The project was designed in Ankara/ Turkey. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The top surface of the desk is coated plywood. The shell is manufactured from blow moulded plastic. The desk legs are made from solid wood (white oak). SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The height of Link is 73 cm(h). The dimensions of the desk surface is 150cm (w) x 65cm(d). The shell, which widens from the front to the back side of the desk, is 2cm in the front (thinnest), and its deepest section is 11cm. TAGS: Desk, Home Office, Working Station, Multi-functionality RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the design process, the needs of working from home was researched. The existing home-office furniture solutions were examined. Several common problems were identified in the current home-office conditions. The first problem was the use of incorrect lighting in video conferences and online meetings, causing shadows or glares on the face of the people. The problem was addressed by offering two adjustable desk lamps that work as studio lighting. Another problem was the cluttering on work surfaces which was caused by the increased number of professional documents and lack of storage spaces. The clutter in work surface was also viewed as one of the reasons behind the lack of motivation. In the design of Link, a curved shell form was used to offer three storage spaces beneath the work surface to offer an orderly working environment. Integrated Bluetooth speakers was incorporated to the design of Link to offer a better video conference and online meeting experience, as well as to create a fun working environment by improving the experience of watching videos and listening to music. Three power outlets were included to provide easy access to charging various electronics. Another major problem was the issue of laptop placement which affected the user experience and ergonomics while working long hours behind a desk. This issue was addressed by designing the desk surface with an adjustable angle, to allow users to position their laptops to a desired height. Considering these problems of working from home, Link is designed to create an aesthetic, ergonomic and orderly working space for people by responding to their needs when connecting to their works and to the world from the comfort of their home. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge in designing Link was the incorporation of different functions while considering ergonomics, as well as the aesthetics and creating a modern look. The curved shell design of Link allowed for the integration of different functions, while also providing desired modern aesthetics for this working desk.
