DESIGN NAME: Smadalaro Gard
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Spa Hotel
INSPIRATION: The estate was originally founded in 1810, when sea captain Carl Peter Blom returned from his many adventures at sea to settle down. The main house, taking inspiration from Mediterranean villas, was built for socializing and became a meeting spot for socialites and cultural personalities. The estate was also a large farm, with crops, fishing, cattle and both a brewery and a distillery. The sea travels, the lavish parties and the farming have all served as essential inspiration for the design.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Foremost it was essential to investigate whether or not it was possible to fit all the required functions into the allowed footprint and height restriction. This was done by calculating what volume each function would require, and thereafter arranging all of the resulting blocks, much like a jenga puzzle, withing the available space.
CHALLENGE: The client requested a large spa with accompanying facilities, such as treatment rooms, gym etc, along with a number of new hotel rooms plus a new entrance and restaurant, all to be centralized in a new structure within a limited footprint and within height restrictions. Simultaneously, any new structure had to adhere to the typology of the Swedish archipelago.
