DESIGN NAME: Joaquim
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding Screen
INSPIRATION: Joaquim is a tribute to my greatest mentor, Joaquim Tenreiro. Inspired by his work Trelica, I created a bookcase screen to suit any space. The main goal was to create a piece of furniture that could provide users with various options together with connecting people and nature, a pungent trend during pandemic times.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Made of carbon steel and pink peroba, this piece can be used as a dividing screen, bookshelf and mobile vertical garden. This piece covers almost every audience. Joaquim is versatile, carries a strong personality and its functionality is dictated by the way the piece is laid out in the room. As a differential, it is a 3-in-1 piece, always with the premise of prioritizing the multi-functionality of furniture.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Easiness and practicality were the pillars to this creation, as the goal was to make a bookshelf that allows to easily switch positions and space arrangement. A folding screen was incorporated as an extra functionality, bringing lightness and usability, ultimately integrating nature, brought from outdoors to the inside in the form of a vertical garden. It's 3 pieces unfold and retract, providing customized width amid the stability required. A versatile piece, adapting to environment/usage, performing as a dividing screen, holding decor objects and interacting with vegetation.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The projected started in January 2021 and finished in March 2021 in Sao Paulo/Brazil.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: An exploratory research was conducted for existing types of hinges and junctions, stability calculations and most suitable sustainable materials. The aim was to select material options that could provide low impact, short time for production, better value for money and easy access. As result, the carbon steel and pink peroba were selected as the best match for the purpose of the piece. Joaquim relies on countless reviews from users that mostly praise the piece's ability to promote a sense of bringing people close to nature, feature much appreciated when it comes to living in big cities.
CHALLENGE: Besides the overwhelming intelectual process in creating the piece, I aimed at using as few material types as possible in order to engage in the minimum environmental impact possible. The premise was to utilize reusable materials, less abundant, as are the carbon steel from remainders of steel industries, and the pink peroba from demolished manors. Once the materials were decided, we worked on simple features and lines as to minimize the manufacturing time and integrate handicraft art for twisting the steel and giving the wood its final touches.
