DESIGN NAME: Budapest Giftbook
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Graphic Design
INSPIRATION: The design was inspired by all that one loves about Budapest. The atmosphere, the ambient streets, historical buildings and busy squares. The Danube, a river that is international to the core, divides as much as it connects the two individual parts: Buda and Pest. The cultural impressions (landmarks, buildings, cuisine, nightlife and arts) were the main motives during the designing process.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Budapest Giftbook is a flipbook with series of illustrations about Budapest, Hungary. This book gives the illusion of continuous movement by simulating motion when the pages are flicked rapidly. Take the city from your pocket and flick it through while re-living memories that only such a vibrant place can offer. Budapest Giftbook is a book and a film, a source of inspiration and a minimalist travel guide, a work of art and a souvenir. Graphic identity of the city.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The design of the book comes to life through interaction with the user, as by his act (i.e. flicking through the pages, something which may be familiar for all from their childhood), the animation and the movements happen. Besides being a nostalgic, interactive gift enjoyable by anyone irrespectively of age, the book also doubles as a practical tour guide. This complex nature granted that after its introduction, the Budapest Giftbook was received with a great success in the social media, as well as by the professional critics.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2019 and was finished in June 2019 in Budapest.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: For the design the typical symbols of Budapest were studied (e.g. landmarks, architectural elements, cultural artifacts), and for the creation various animation and editing techniques were explored.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of the designing process was to test and create motion and editing of the subsequent pictures in a way that seamless animation is presented when flicking through the book, but the pictures can be enjoyed individually, too, by the viewer.
