DESIGN NAME: Huafa Xiangshan Project
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Building
INSPIRATION: To build a shopping mall with a comfortable living experience full of greenery, the massing and the facade design is inspired by the nature and blending with the unique humanities and art of the city. Meanwhile, connection with the Cultural Center at south side of the plot is also considered. The commercial facade is inspired by natural landscape of forest, bamboo and waterfalls, to address its diversity through architectural fins with individual profiles.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a mixed-use development is located in the main cultural district of Zhuhai, nestled between the mountains and the sea. The 3-segmented tower volumes are designed to appear faceted in elevation which help to visually reduce the building's scale while emphasizing its vertical form. The two towers are strategically positioned to maximize the perimeter views towards both the mountain and the city scapes. It also respects and minimizes the shadowing impact to the surrounding infrastructure.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: For residential towers, each tower is comprised of 3 independent cores serving 2 units per floor with a dedicated private lift lobby for each unit. Every residence has a private entry vestibule leading to an elegant entry way with the main living spaces connected directly to large deep balconies which intend to blur the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor spaces. The commercial LED screen and shopfronts of the retail stores are designed together to balance the style and the function.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is located in the core administrative area of Xiangzhou, south of Meihua East Road, east of Yingbin North Road, and adjacent to Wuzhou Flower City Phase III. The site is located in the city center, at the junction of the old and the new Xiangzhou, which provides the comprehensive living facilities around the site. The construction is started and target to be completed in December 2024.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The modern techniques are used to entrust the spirit of the city, integrating nature with humanities and art through sunken plaza and blending in with the surrounding urban environment. It combines the elements of terrace with greenery to show a poetic form. Layers of interlocked spaces are connected smoothly creating a unique experience. The forest garden on podium top integrates nature and life, making a comfortable living community experience with simplicity and synchronizing with the linear.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site area is 18,699 sqm and the total gross floor area is 184,503 sqm with 136,175 sqm above ground and 48,327sqm below ground. The project consists of 2 high-end residential towers with 180m and 100m high on a 5 story retail podium. And 2 below ground parking levels is designed with 880 parking spaces. At the top of the tower, a 9m tall glass parapet sets back from the perimeter wall allowing the cantilevered roof feature to wrap around and become an iconic illuminated beacon for towers.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The retail is themed with the concept of culture, family, health and nature to reflect the pursuance of a pleasurable life in the city. The main target group focuses on middle to upper class family, including the office workers and visitors. This new shopping center will become a prominent hub with the most stylish urban lifestyle experience in Zhuhai, and provides Xiangzhou residents with an urban life garden that integrates shopping, social entertainment, family life and leisure experience.
CHALLENGE: To integrate with the residential facade design, the podium synchronizes with the linear gesture of Cultural Center through terracing on its massing and facade across the plots, combining terraces with facade design inspired by natural landscape of forest and waterfalls, blending the unique humanities and greenery city to show a poetic form of architecture. The combination of facade elements in shopfronts, metal feature wall and LED screen, integrating the overall image of the project.
