DESIGN NAME: Dawn of Spring
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Building
INSPIRATION: DAWN OF SPRING, is a residential community located within International Eco-Aquapolis, Zhengzhou, China. The demonstration area is situated at the crossroad on the southwest of the residential community. The building echoes with the street corner through the subtly-cut blocks. It's a three-storey volume, with the second and third floors lifted above the transparent block at the bottom, hence creating a "floating" architectural image.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: An extensible space is created by well-proportioned, inter-connected screen walls at the entrance of the demonstration area. With an asymmetrical and flexible form, this entrance area well integrates with the main building body.
The building and outdoor screen walls enclose a tranquil and twisting water courtyard. When walking on it, visitors can experience varying views. The interplay between the real and the virtual and the dappled shadows of trees create a poetic view.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The project is located within International Eco-Aquapolis, Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China. International Eco-Aquapolis is a promising area of the city, with a large potential of future development. We aim to create a modern, understated luxurious living scene. With "growing box" as the main building body, the design attempts to integrate the architecture and the environment together.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2020 in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, China and finished in October 2020 in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The first-floor glass curtain wall of the main building body creates transparency and integrity. The large area of perforated aluminum panels used on the facades of the second and third floors produces unified visual effects and hazy, aesthetic exteriors, which weaken the boundary between the building and the surrounding environment. Vertical wrinkles of the perforated panels break the sense of monotony caused by the large area of a uniform material.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project occupies a gross floor area of 1,989.32sqm, a plot area of 682.18sqm, and a landscape area of 2,908.63sqm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project functions as a demonstration area at the early stage, and as a kindergarten at the late stage. To meet two distinct functional requirements and be convenient for transformation, we did research on similar cases, block model analysis and site circulation analysis before making the final design scheme. By transforming the exteriors, we created different facades for the kindergarten and the demonstration area respectively.

CHALLENGE: The biggest challenge was site selection for the demonstration area. DAWN OF SPRING is planned to accommodate public facilities that radiate the surrounding neighborhoods, so its land area for healthcare center, comprehensive community service space, cultural & activity center, elderly home and kindergarten is much larger than that of the surrounding neighborhoods. In addition, there are strict requirements for sun exposure of the future kindergarten.
