DESIGN NAME: OCT OHBAY
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wayfinding Signage System
INSPIRATION: The coastal park in a tropical city integrates multifunctional spaces including high-end shopping mall and varied event places. The shoreline in downtown is approximately 80km, most of which is not suitable for waterfront activities. The park provides citizens with safe waterfront environment and experience of high quality. The wayfinding signage system is derived from sea waves and gravels, the coastal elements seen often locally, complementing citizens' expectation for coastal city.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Both the civic park and the commercial space are of different types of operation and environment. They are juxtaposed and connected through the use of the interactive visual sign – sea waves and gravels. The cognition toward the complex's functions is unified.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The outdoor sign boards in the shape of gravels scatter throughout the park with a broad view, dotting the green land along the paths like on the beach. The interior sign boards are formed in the shape of sea waves, interlocking the geometrical building volumes like a flying spray at sea. When roaming from the seaside to the park, visitors could have a feeling that coastal elements are revealed everywhere.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The outdoor sign boards, with an emphasis on the completeness and solidness of gravels, adopt the integrated design of assembling the main skeleton in factory in advance. This approach ensures the perfect presentation of signage, and is convenient for on-site assembly and maintenance. Moreover, it is resistant to the hurricane of over 12 levels in summer. The transparent messaging medium boards are illuminated in blue for navigation at night, expressing the ocean elements.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The location of the project is a coastal city, but spaces along the shoreline that are situated in downtown and offer opportunities to touch the sea are quite rare. After we analyzed the satellite map and the urban planning of the whole city, based on the on-site investigation on similar environments, the waterfront visual factors have been deemed as one of the citizens' common needs nowadays.
CHALLENGE: The commercial architecture as well as several landmark buildings and structures, such as Ferris wheel and concert hall, are of different styles. The biggest challenge was to create a unified but unique wayfinding signage system that integrates itself into the surrounding environment by minimalism and to the greatest extent expresses the generousness visually.
