| DESIGN NAME: Renmin Road 1979 PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sales Center INSPIRATION: As a transportation hub and the artery of Kunming's important historical culture, human and business, Renmin Road was officially unveiled in the year 1979, which witnessed the business boom and industrial economic development of the old town of Kunming. With the urban renewal and upgrading, and the change from old culture to the new one, the old town sparkles with renewed vitality. Renmin Road, carrying the unique emotional symbol of the old town, is engraved with the development venation of its adapting to the times. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This case is closely around the clues of Time, Emotion and City, interpreting the inheritance from the old Renmin Road and the new urban development. Through maintenance and reshapeing of the existing buildings and spaces, inward construction is adopted for the development. The urban memory, cultural symbols and their underlying logics are retained with modern design techniques, to create an interdependent community of the old and the new, to explore the completion and cooperation between reconstruction and preservation, and to motivate people for critical thinking about things. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In this project, the designer, by exploring the development course and the urban cultural memory of Renmin Road from year 1979 to 2021, hopes to help the client present a space that will evoke the emotion of the old town and relive its cultural history and memory. With the design concept of reviving an old town, emanating a blooming era, the designer uses extremely tense modern artistic expression techniques to create vivid experience of people walking and cruising through the buildings, so as to bring closer the distance among history, space and people in the field. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The environmentally friendly stones poured by cement are mainly used in the space, embellished with mirror finished stainless steel sheets and gray cement sheets. By grasping the fission of old and new materials, textures and colors, the designer shows the mixture and collision between the sense of history and modernity concisely and powerfully. Columns are used to distinguish the dynamic and static parts in functional spaces. Likewise the partition and combination of geometric blocks are in continued use, echoed with soft decoration, to fully express and extend the design tactics. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: This case is 488 squre meters in total. TAGS: Interior design, Sunac, Kunming, Sales Center, Renmin Road 1979 RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The designer made site visits for many times to come up with field reports for further onsite measurement and calculation, as well as the shape landing and relevant constructions. By digging deeply into the history and humanities of Renmin Road, the designer accomplished an interdependent community of the old and the new, to well achieve both the contrast and fusion by bringing in new technologeis, new materials into the old and traditional objects, and the original spaces. CHALLENGE: The overall space of the lobby area of the project is dominated by inclined planes, in which it's rather difficult for the onsite measurement and calculation, as well as the shaping handling. The walls are divided and collaged by different geometries through modern crafting techniques with aesthetic taste. Thousands of acrylic sheets are cut and spliced in a staggered manner to be used as the creation materials of the unique background wall for the bar area.
