DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Cobogos House

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Residential Project

INSPIRATION:
The main concept is a design typology in straight lines and volumes on the facade at different heights and applications of materials that bring great personality to the project: apparent concrete molded in place, wood, and Cobogos. Access levels steps are created, suspended over the garden area. The landscaping is remarkable for its tropical foliage and exotic trees.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The design is defined by the facade in straight lines, using decorative concrete blocks, called Cobogos. These decorative concrete elements are allowing free movement of wind through its empty spaces. A large and asymmetrical marquee, made of concrete, covers the main entrance. The front landscape includes a typical Japanese cherry tree next to the stairs. In the back external area, a large pool on three different levels is surrounded by lush landscaping. A centenary olive tree was placed prominently connecting the social area, the bedrooms, and the pool area.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The central idea is to use pure and simple shapes, right angles, and application of specific materials, providing thermal comfort, durability, and functionality. The highlight of the facade is found in the decorative concrete blocks, the Cobogos, allowing the free movement of the wind in its empty spaces. These elements, combined with reinforced concrete and slatted aluminum with wood pattern, bring identity and personify the project. The outdoor leisure area, comprising a large swimming pool and lush landscaping with tropical foliage and a century-old olive tree, creating an inviting and welcoming atmosphere.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in January 2017 in Franca, Brazil, and finished in January 2020.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The house was built in reinforced concrete and masonry, with great advances in concrete slabs. Aluminum strips with the wood visual pattern were coating the main entrance door. The choice of aluminum on the facades, guarantees the durability of the product, in addition to little maintenance, together with the aesthetic and cozy look of the wood. The biggest challenge was to apply this material to coat the walls and gates of the garage. The opening span for the passage of the cars is 12 meters long and has been carefully executed to hide the openings, giving the impression of a large cube on the facade.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Cobogos House has 645.00 m2 of built area. The land has 1500.00 m2 of the area and a significant drop to the bottom of the land. In view of the slope to the back, the project was developed on two levels. The lower area is a large lawn and tropical gardens. The house is located on the highest level, privileging the natural view of the landscape. The whole house opens onto the large garden next to the pool, with most of the openings facing a beautiful sunset.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The main concept is a design typology in straight lines and volumes on the facade at different heights and applications of materials that bring great personality to the project: apparent concrete molded in place, large concrete overhangs, aluminum slats with wooden patterns, and Cobogos. Access levels are created, suspended over the garden area. The landscaping is remarkable for its tropical foliage and exotic trees.

CHALLENGE:
A great resource was the use of aluminum slats with a wood pattern visual as vertical blinds to contribute to the thermal comfort of the internal space, in addition to providing the aesthetic look of natural wood. Because they are a lighter material, garage doors performed well in the opening mechanism. The main door received the same aluminum material and the pivot system was used for the opening. The biggest challenge was to execute a large opening over 18 meters long, dividing the large internal living room from the outside area. The project specifies a large sliding door with 12 sliding panels made of PVC frame and tempered glass. This clear span provides perfect integration between the inside area and outside.
