DESIGN NAME: Falcon
PRIMARY FUNCTION: False Ceiling Inspection Robot
INSPIRATION: Most spaces in urban countries face the issue of high rodent activity, especially in false ceilings which are poorly lit, damp and limiting in access for manual inspection. Falcon is a novel robot aimed at providing sound inspection, monitoring and management of false ceilings and preventing the infestation of rodents.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In manual inspection of false ceilings, the environment is often dimly lit, poorly managed and quite inaccessible. Though it is difficult for humans, Falcon being a robot of adaptable, minimal size and robust properties to overcome complexity proves to effectively inspect and monitor false ceiling environments. Equipped with sensors, imaging devices on board, the robot provides real time support in false ceilings and thereby aids in providing control measures to improve the environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Falcon is a novel mobile robot, dedicated solely towards rodent control in false ceilings, equipped with autonomous localization, navigation and imaging. The robotic system is aided by sensors and maneuvering algorithms to effectively trap moving rodents even in low lit environments. The miniaturized, adaptable design aids in mechanically returning to its original position even upon toppling about false ceilings, a complex environment unspecified to a particular blueprint. The robot is manually controlled through Wi-Fi, via an app dedicated to get the real-time data and to navigate the robot about the environment.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2020 and is supported by National Robotics program and National Environment Agency

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Falcon is a compact robot with minimal size to adapt to the surroundings and consists of a design that supports it from falling or toppling over complex structures, part of the false ceiling environment. The robot is aided by illumination provided from within and real time environmental feedback aided by cameras fixed along different perspectives of the robotic body. Further, sensors that feedback data continuously run AI algorithms that help in maneuvering the robot meets shakes hands with the mechanical design to keep the robotic system stable in the unpredictable terrain.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In view of the harmful effects of rodent infestations, especially in the false ceilings of several buildings, its high time we emphasize in innovating to inspect and manage such environments. The inspection and management of false ceilings is a manual task which can be effectively aided by robotic systems with their ability to traverse about the unknown environment. Thus, we aim at creating a robotic system that is adaptable, mechanically robust to navigate and inspect false ceilings and provide useful real time feedback to improve the surroundings while preventing the infestation of harmful rodents.
CHALLENGE: The major challenge associated with building a mobile inspection robot for false ceilings is its adaptability in size, shape and ability to maneuver in the false ceiling environments, while collecting reliable information from the environment that aids in successfully navigating and effecting control of rodent activity. To be able to smoothly navigate in complex false ceilings without compromising in the quality of feedback data from the sensory devices on board proves to be a challenge as well.
