PRIMARY FUNCTION: Multifunctional Chair
INSPIRATION: Different from the high-quality trend of office furniture design development, classroom furniture design in China seems to be forgotten. With the development of education in China, new requirements are put forward for university furniture design.
The chair is generated with the design concept of "ripples", which is based on the current situation and dilemma of Chinese students and their future visions. Nowadays Chinese students need more comfortable, autonomous and enjoyable experience in learning, which inspired us to activate the vitality of classroom furniture design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a multifunctional classroom chair with work surface and storage base. The work surface can be rotated to create multiple functions. It provides comfort to students in learning and other scenarios. The main three functions of the work surface are: (a) when the work surface is moved to the front of chair, it supports reading, writing, etc. (b) When it is moved to the sides, users can lean their arms on it for relaxing. (c) When it is moved to the back, it is convenient for face-to-face communication between students and teachers.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When a student walks into the classroom, the creative chair empowers him and/or her visual enjoyment. The student could feel the active and pleasant atmosphere in classroom, which leads him to focus on the study. Students can place their stuffs around seats properly. The books, laptops, etc. can be easily placed on the enlarged work surface. When students have a group discussion, they can move the chairs freely on their needs. The chair supports them to enjoy a positive day.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2020 in Shanghai and finished in January 2021 in Shanghai.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: After a thorough investigation of the situation of university classroom furniture and the target users, university students, we insight into user needs on the function, emotion and vision based on the current dilemmas and future visions of the students. We have developed the design concept of "ripples" chair, which has storage function and work surface to meet the needs of users through positive method in combination with the classroom furniture design trends.
The materials used in this chair include PVC boards, textiles, steel pipes and metal parts.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The overall size of the chair is 700 mm x 680 mm x 773 mm. The seat diameter is 450 mm. The seat height is 450 mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: With the education development in China, students' demand on classroom furniture becomes more diverse. For more enjoyable classroom atmosphere and more interactive activity, we have investigated the university classroom furniture and interviewed university student users. We analyzed the current situation, dilemma and future visions of the students and summarized user needs on function, emotion and vision. Based on the positive method, the chair will be used in a classroom with about 15 people, which will bring some happiness factors including security, popularity and autonomy.
CHALLENGE: During the research of the project, we comprehensively considered the balance between product function, style and production possibilities, technology. Firstly, the seat should meet personal pleasure and demanding, such as aesthetics, product appearance, good storage function, and comfort. Secondly, the seat should be interactive. The rotatable work surface can be adapted to the various postures of users during communication. The chairs can be combined into various forms easily. Thirdly, the product should be produced in mass. The process of production and assembly has been fully considered.
