DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
New Age Transformation

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Incubation Center

INSPIRATION:
With an area of about 1600 square meters, the plant requires multilevel extensions to enrich the large space. After a detailed observation of the building, the designers decided to utilize the design technique of architecture within architecture as introducing three-dimensional architectural thinking into space. By connecting different ranges of fields, the designers create diverse scenery in the space, a rhythm and order of architecture within architecture is exhibited.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Quietly immersed in the universe of the imperial capital, the last days of the old factory building totter over the barriers of misery and conservativeness. The building is like a dragon waiting for the right moment to jump out and break the confinement within the ancient city wall, turning over the historic desolation. Originally built in 1996, the space was not only an abandoned factory but a monument that embodies the old time. Now, it is ready to onboard the train to new age as an Incubator for new technology.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Of the ten abandoned factory buildings, the location of Factory No. 8 stands out as the frontage in the old warehouse storage park district. It, therefore, becomes the key visual design of the group of buildings, judged to be the best suited for welcoming various business activities. Thus, the project, Factory No. 8, is born for the new age to become an incubator for the culture and the science industry.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project is started in 2018 and finished in 2019. The project base is in Beijing, China.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The mottled texture of the old factory buildings presents a unique artistic beauty. With the old look and minimal decorative materials, the beauty of time is preserved. While the main internal walls stacked with red bricks are kept and the structures of the ceilings are exposed, the original architectural structure lines become eye-catching. It displays an aura of simplicity as glass curtains create transparency and enhance the visibility of active lines and dimensions in the space.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The designers apply the technique of architecture within architecture while designing the project of 1600 square meters. Plant No. 8 equips cafes, restaurants, libraries, joint offices, and other public facilities that fulfill and enrich office space. The entire plant meets the intellectual hardware satisfaction of the original incubation platform and is elevated with an image complied with the new age. The materials used are H-shaped steel, square steel pipes, 10 mm steel plates, glass curtain, membrane structure ceiling with built-in LED lighting, self-leveling floor cement, solid wood floors, composite wood flooring, and red brick.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The ultimate goal is that polish the old building with the aid of a new structure. The details incorporate a variety of contrasting creative installations completely transcending the original LOFT framework, similar to impressionism, bringing in floods of memories and impressions implanted into the visual intensity. Walking around, the exquisiteness of the alternation between old and new can be appreciated as nostalgic stories are evoked. The invisible space atmosphere is integrated with historical perception to present the cultural beauty of the old building.

CHALLENGE:
In No. 8 Creative Space, designers curate details impressionistically, bringing in floods of memories and impressions with visual intensity to resonate with people. The exquisiteness of the corresponding and merging between the old (the appearance of the old building) and the new (minimal decorative materials, architecture within architecture, multilevel extensions, and new materials) emerges when nostalgia is evoked. Hence, the project is integrated with historical perception and the beauty of the old building is enhanced.
