DESIGN NAME: Shenzhen Social
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Welfare Center
INSPIRATION: The two buildings for the children and the elderly are independent but share resources. The buildings, facing the south, can be divided or connected via corridors. The building is constructed multiple layers, applicable and economical. Courtyard combination embodies Lingnan artistic conception. Red brick shows an elegant and simple feeling. Our design goal is to control cost, carry forward Lingnan features and create a bright, spacious and warm architectural hue with good ventilation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is by far the largest comprehensive social welfare center in Shenzhen, housing the children's home and the old people's home. Sited at the north of Guanguang Road, Longhua District, the site, surrounded by industrial plants, has a height discrepancy of 3-6 m. Thus, these multi-story buildings are extended along the north-south axis with corridors connecting each other. The medical building sits at the center, easily accessible to the children's home and the old people's home.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We investigated the situations of foreign and domestic welfare architecture development for the first time. Thus, we considered solutions from aspects of planning and architecture, and deeply and meticulously studied difference between functional units of children and the elderly. Units for children have a detailed and clear subdivision, from 0-1, 1-1.5, 1.5-3 years old, etc., and disabled groups. We made a detailed conception and contrast of each part.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Design time: July 1, 2013
Completion time: December 29, 2016
Location: Guanlan Town, Longhua New District, Shenzhen

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each building is independently operated yet connected, convenient for further functional transition and response to regional climate. The traffic circulation route emphasizes the strategy of 'separation of people and vehicles', and vertical traffic distribution is achieved via the corridor. The main structure uses an ordinary reinforced concrete frame. The column network size is between 7-9 m, and the roof has an ordinary reinforced concrete floor system that uses cast-on-site beams.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Raising orphaned and disabled children and taking care of the elderly play a vital role for maintaining prolonged stability of the Party and state and improving people's livelihood. Shenzhen Social Welfare Center (new) is designed to be a representational welfare facility. The project is designed by many extraordinary designers like Zhong Zhong, Zhong Botao, etc. It has won The 2nd Shenzhen Architectural Creation Award 2016 and The 4th Shenzhen Architectural Design Award 2018.
CHALLENGE: According to the Design Brief, the design shall control cost, carry forward Lingnan features and create a bright, spacious and warm architectural hue with good ventilation. In particular, the project needs a pleasant scale and integration of city and environment rather than taking a fantastic form, exaggerated structures or unique materials. Therefore, the challenge is to satisfy the needs required in Design Brief so as to create a standard welfare center.
