| DESIGN NAME: The Mountain View PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mix Use INSPIRATION: The client and architects saw new possibilities, hoping to bring people back to the building and feel the unique beauty of nature. The client wished to incorporate new designs and a business mode centering on cultural and creative activities into the building. Therefore, architects renovated and repurposed the building, aiming to create a distinctive and mix-used cultural complex, which integrates diversified functional spaces such as store, restaurant, art gallery, theater, workspace, etc. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Both the client and architects saw new possibilities, hoping to bring people back to the building and feel the unique beauty of nature. The client wished to incorporate new designs and a business mode centering on cultural and creative activities into the building. Therefore, architects renovated and repurposed the building, aiming to create a distinctive and mix-used cultural complex, which integrates diversified functional spaces such as store, restaurant, art gallery, theater, workspace, etc. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Based on the surrounding business environment, the architects decided to carry out transformation and renovation based on three key points: combination of art and commerce, complementarity of catering space and workspace, and branding-oriented spatial operation. The spatial design was intended to connect different areas and commercial operations as much as possible. In addition, the architects conceived multiple combinations of spaces to adapt to commercial operations in the building. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Around the central courtyard is an open-air veranda, which not only links different areas but also blends the space into nature. The veranda is supported by rectangular steel pillars, which are arranged in a matrix, endowing the space with a sense of lightness and order. The restaurant floor is covered by various materials including greenery, pebbles, corrosion-resistant wooden panels and cement, to demarcate different functional spaces. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Structural reinforcement method: bonding profile steel and anchoring stirrups Materials: self-leveling cement, weathering steel, laminated bamboo, ultra-clear glass, glass brick, white latex paint Area: 6,000 sqm TAGS: Urban exhibition hall, gallery, Onexn Architects, commercial complex, transformation, OCT LOFT, culture, art, theater, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Since completion, a lot of drama festivals, lectures, art exhibitions and events have been held in the building, which has attracted a large number of local citizens. The project is situated in a cultural and creative park where plenty of design studios have settled in. As an artistic and cultural complex, The Mountain View complements the park, and provides urbanites with a "slow space", which enables them to socialize and interact with nature and art. CHALLENGE: The design team had to optimize spatial layout to incorporate multiple operations. Besides, many indicators of the old building could no longer meet current standards in China, which posed a huge challenge. To solve this, the design team worked out many corresponding solutions, and kept a close eye on on-site construction, hence obtaining a safe, beautiful building which meets existing standards. NAME: Onexn Architects PROFILE: Space is a medium to connect and reveal. Starting from this point of view, all of our thinking and practices in ONEXN lead to the essence of architecture, and that is exactly what ONE stands for. On the other hand, X stands for the multiple opportunities and challenges from unknown fields when our architectural thinking interacts with the external world and bring about transformations and reactions where we can make something different. We are not satisfied with the completion of a project, but want to realize the continuity of the context, and create places that are closely related to our life. Starting from their devotion to architectural thinking and practicing, Bo Zhang and Jingjing Wang founded ONEXN Architects in Shenzhen in 2015. This multi-disciplinary team consists of professionals from different backgrounds including urban planners, architects, interior designers, and craftsperson. We emphasize on the integrality, innovativeness, and feasibility throughout the project cycle, through the multi-discipline cooperation, we aim to find the best solution in the process to balance many factors including concept, materials, technology, cost, construction, limitations. Systematic strategies are used to achieve cultural and spiritual spatial experience from the inspiration to finalization. |
