| DESIGN NAME: Evolve PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lobby Art INSPIRATION: I wanted to create a one of a kind sculpture based on science and technology that will enhance experiences and Initiate Ideas. We can invent a future where a diverse community is rewarded for pursuing new opportunities that will benefit humanity and leave a legacy of progress. Each of the three shapes in the sculpture each represent the Leidos Core values of being approachable, valuing intellect, and the pursuit of being visionary. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Evolve is a cosmic kaleidoscope that changes colors as viewers walk by. At dawn, Evolve refracts sunlight into a dichromatic rainbow throughout the lobby of Leidos Inc. Visitors are welcomed in with playful colored shadows that move throughout the day. Evolve is gracefully suspended by aircraft cable, and uses NASA developed dichroic Plexiglas to create a space age feel. The sculptures apex features a Penrose triangle proving that this once thought impossible object can, in fact, exist. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The sculpture is designed to evoke a sense of awe and wonder through the use of surprise. Upon noticing the sculpture changing colors first time viewers will have their curiosity piqued. If they chose to ask the how and why, they will discover some of the universes the most interesting questions. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The sculpture was designed and fabricated in Chicago, IL during 2019 & 2020. It was transported to Reston Va and installed in March 2020. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Dichroic Plexiglass, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Mirrors, LEDs, and Sunlight The dichroic plexiglass, like a quantum particle, can simultaneously exhibit different colors to viewers from different angles. When the observer circles the sculpture the dichroic panels morph between states of colors. The sculpture uses a patent pending hinge made from 5mm water jet aerospace grade aluminum. "The Signal Bracket" offers 330' of rotation and locks in place at the desired angle. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 6000mm x Depth 6000mm x Height 4300mm Weight 960lbs TAGS: Lobby Art, Sculpture, Abstract, Lobby Design, Dichroic, Suspended Sculpture, Atrium Sculpture RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Could we create sensual elevation - the feeling of comfort and contemplation in the Leidos Lobby through the use of a surreal light bending sculpture? Creating a feeling of elevation begins with one key action, looking up. In order to achieve this vision increased our viewing space by affixing a nineteen foot mirror to the ceiling and added an recessed lighting halo. We discovered that when looking straight up from the middle of the sculpture, you often experience a sense of cognitive dissonance that allows you to feel as if you are now somehow closer to the sculpture. CHALLENGE: Our focus was to integrate the client core values, of being approachable, intellect, and visionary into an abstract sculpture. We achieved this by using their iconography of, a circle, a hexagon, and a triangle to represent these values. The bold integration of color and triangular forms in Evolve was intentional to match their brand colors and logo. As fate would have it the Leidos logo is perfectly reflected in one of the ultraviolet panels.
