DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Wuhan Liantou Tower

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Office

INSPIRATION:
The god bird, Phoenix, is the design concept for this project, exterior facade and interior lobby's design vocabulary are inspired by the flow line of Phoenix's beautiful body figure and crown. We also try to create layers in exterior wall details to express the sophisticated and rich Phoenix feathers. Many sky atriums and greens are utilized and suggested to enhance indoor space quality, promote communications, and healthy life style.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With "Phoenix" concept, the office building top, and podium massing are mimicking phoenix's crown and tail. 8 corner offices are created to make the building slender. Tower top executive floors with interior garden and skylight allow magnificent views toward lakes and river. Main entrance has folded canopy and facade. Large scale transparent glass brings in natural light to welcome visitors. Independent sky atriums and reception are designed to satisfy client's multi-disciplined business need.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Many internal atriums, sky gardens, auditorium, exhibition space, roof garden, staff gym, canteen, reading rooms are created and designed to promote better social life and communications among staff in this building. A comfortable space scale, plenty of natural light, and adjustable fresh air intake encourage the users to control and enhance their experience within. Semi outdoor roof garden allows the users to interact with man-made nature inside this building.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project is located in Wuhan, China, and will complete in 3-4 years.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The building will be mainly made out of stone, steel, concrete, glass, metal, and wood. We use a parametric design tool starting from massing studies, gross floor area calculation, facade pattern control, drawing generation with modifications to landscape design studies. The parametric design tool helps us find the right design balance faster based on scientific analysis and aesthetic preferences.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
The main tower is 150m in height, and GFA is 666,98 sqm (include above grade area 46,574 sqm and below grade area 20,124 sqm), 49m long and 32m wide. The podium is 24m in height, 21.8m long, and 32m wide. We need to provide 30% of the site area to public green facing the main streets. Strict building setback lines requested by code are 22.5m from east and 12m from the north.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Function, projects with similar scale researches are conducted. Case studies and scale comparison are methods used to collect plans and elevation data. Our design team members are the main participants conducting the research. Plan layout, facade pattern, eye-catching entrance, and lobby design are the result and insight we gain from the researches. The client is happy with the design result since the building provides solutions for their complicated demands and suits for their corporate identity.

CHALLENGE:
The site is small with restricted building setback line by code, including the corners. 30% of the site must be provided for public green at the north and east side facing 2 major streets, which highly limits the building footprint and basement car ramp location. One 500 seats auditorium is requested by client and can only be located at the podium due to the egress code. Façade cost control needs to be reasonable for client but still need to have attractive design highlights at the entrance.
