DESIGN NAME: Xi An Vanke Feng Xi Metropolis Plot 5
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mixed Use
INSPIRATION: The design of project stands as a symbol, it adopts the importance of the city as an ancient imperial capital and eastern departure point of the Silk Road. Silk has been the identity of city as an introduction gateway and image to the outside of the world. The mild wave and pleats are applied to be the facade expression symbolizing the silk itself. Reliable to gradually transparent blocks enhance the conviviality welcoming people into the green oasis of the shopping mall.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Project is located in Xi An, one of the oldest cities in China. This commercial mixed use development offers a 100000 square meters mega green mall and 34000 square meters office tower. This development targets the young generation of professionals and families in Xi An. The design strategy is oriented towards sustainability to its surroundings and provides public space that connecting the outdoor and indoor space. The glass facade portion at the lower podium provides a gateway connection to shopping paradise.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There were many rounds of communication and adjustment between the tower landing and the main interface of with the clients and the city authorities. We paid attention to the relationship between the public and private circulation, integrated with the urban street scale, and improved the microclimate environment of the building.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Sep 2019 and finished construction drawing. It would be opened in 2022 in Xi An, China.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The double layered facade that use a curtain wall system to encase the second layer of the featured facade creates a showcase style design element. Low emissivity glass is applied in the project as the primary glass material to increase the energy efficiency of the design. Landscape features such as green plants and waterfalls are introduced in the shopping mall interior to help create a quality air environment and passing cooling and heating systems that will assist in balancing the internal temperature.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The site area is 33601 square meters, with total floor area of 190831 square meters.
The above ground floor area, with calculating the volume ratio is 134404 square meters, which including mall area of 100779 square meters.
The 126 meters high office tower consist of 33625 square meters, with under ground floor area that not calculating the volume ratio is 56,427 square meters, including underground retail of 5158 square meters and vehicle garage of 51268 square meters.
The 38 meters high shopping mall has 7 floors on the ground and 2 floors underground.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A significant problem that designers need to solve of the project is to the massive height differences of the plot, so multi ground entrances with different height is introduced, people flow from all directions can enter to the mall conveniently. The design of the facade is integrated with traditional Chinese culture. Designers extract silk as a symbolic element for deconstruction and connecting the facade volumes with various ribbons like decorations.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this project is to consider how to localize the commercial mall to this site, which should inherit local culture of Xi An. On the other hand, we want to give this mall one of the most essential functions to provide a shopping place that fit for whole family, especially for children who need playground and interesting education elements belong to the city. As a result, we design to emerge local culture and the function of family entertainments into this project.
