DESIGN NAME: El Cuartel del Mar
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Restaurant
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of the project came largely from its surroundings, the colors/textures/sensations and materials of place. A laid back but sophisticated atmosphere were aspects that we wanted to integrate into the work.
We selected natural materials: wood, stone, lime mortar, and some modern architectural details such as the cross pillars. A mixture of geometries and compositions integrated with naturalness and apparent simplicity in the existing structure.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Cuartel del Mar project rehabilitates the old Civil Guard barracks of the Loma del Puerco in Chiclana de la Frontera (ESP) to new adaptive uses restaurant, strategic bird watching areas, and the development of cultural and leisure activities.
The building crowns the hillside from the Barrosa Beach, opening up the landscape with a respectful intervention by studio More&Co that highlights the unique characteristics of the environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Visitor and staff spaces are organized for design efficiency; the reception is at the entrance of the restaurant “front-of-house” to accompany guests to their tables; the kitchen is situated “back-of-house” with its own unloading area; and services/changing rooms have separate access for visitors and staff. The “wet” installations are grouped to maximize construction efficiency. The exhibition zone is enlarged and left open, flexible to adapt to leisure and cultural activities. It is located in direct relation to the patio which can be used as an expansion of the exhibition space. The patio is protected from the sometimes windy condition of the coast, and can be used for a variety of functions (e.g. musical performances) or simply used as a rest area for visitors at the center.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The complete process lasted two years including delays with permits. Construction took 6 months.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The complex has been conditioned in the most respectful and integrated way possible both inside and outside, including passive solar protection strategies using pergolas to control sun light and finishes in light tones to reduce heat gain.
Natural materials and local construction techniques were used such as wood, woven reeds, lime mortar, and careful vegetation selection that blends with the surrounding landscape, as if it was always there.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Cuartel del Mar is made up of two long pavilions parallel to the beach. In the west one is located the restaurant and kitchen. The east one integrates the exhibition space and services for the entire complex. Both constructions are accessed by the main entrance in the northern facade through a shared outdoor multifunctional patio, the backbone of the complex which provides the circulation/movement as well as creating an indoor/outdoor relationship.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The change of use of a building required a complete rethinking of the spaces to adapt them to new life. A series of improvements have been made in the distribution, both inside and outside, to make the most out of the existing conditions, enhance views, and allow the fluid use of the facilities by both visitors and staff.
