DESIGN NAME: Eco Expo Korea
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Poster
INSPIRATION: The earth faces the problem of 'Food Desertification'; with the development of industrialization and processed food. The rapid decline in the number of plants, which are the raw materials for many foods, and genetically modified cultivation introduced a new generation of mankind who knows tomato ketchup but not the tomatoes. The 404 not found graphic shows how such food desertification deforms the original concept of plants and creates a new concept artificially selected.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The graphic design '404 not found', displayed in 'Eco Expo' in 2019.
In the graphics, multiple pixel layers repeat their appearance and disappearance being damaged or transforming into new images. There are layers implying the concept of plants being artificially selected or vanishing away. The layer cover up the previous by cheaning its ratio. This represents the gap between the original plant and the artificially selected new concept as in the 404 error.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: As multiple pixel layers cover the top and bottom of the object, it changes with the pollution level of the environment, the scale of industrialization, and the number of people in the current plant species. When all layers are full, they turn red.
Objects, which are hidden in layers and are increasingly invisible, tell us the progress of food desertification, and can graphically derive the progress of desertification of food that you have searched through the website.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was displayed at COEX Hall in Gangnam, Seoul, from October 13 to November 10, 2019.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We investigated the raw materials (plants) of food that were disappearing.
Recognizing that there are fewer cases of encountering plant prototypes due to processed and fast food, the correlation was quantified and graphically made.
Due to excessive plant species improvement, aquaculture-type indoor cultivation, and industrialization, this situation, in which humans and plants become increasingly distant, contact points disappear, and forget what the raw materials are, was set up as the term "artificial selection of plant concepts" and applied to the design.
CHALLENGE: We want to raise awareness about the current situation facing mankind through extreme settings in which the concept of food is newly established due to 404 errors.
