DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
The Mask That Ate The Virus

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Virus-eliminating Mask

INSPIRATION:
Swiss biotech company Livinguard developed a textile for reusable masks that inactivates bacteria, fungi, and viruses (incl. Covid 19) upon impact. The product idea is brought to life in the packaging: The mask comes in a sterile package. An attached plastic strip animates – when slid up and down – a virus that is getting eaten in the process, adding some urgently needed humor in desperate days.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A patented, specially treated textile is used for these reusable masks, that eliminates viruses, bacteria and fungi upon impact (incl. Covid 19).

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The task was to communicate a new, unique product advantage to the consumer via the packaging: that a simple textile can provide protection, every single day.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The product was launched in May 2020. Up to date 5 Million masks were produced. Market: China/Worldwide

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Packaging Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Livinguard treated textile, styrofoam, EVA

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 220 x Depth 22 x Height 220

TAGS:
Mask, virus-eliminating, Covid 19, Coronavirus, Livinguard

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
To bring the virus-eliminating process to life in the packaging, we made use of a century old technique: Moiré Animation – creating an optical illusion of animated frames, with the graphic depiction of a virus getting 'eaten' in the process.

CHALLENGE:
Finding the right materials and printing technology that would allow for a highly accurate production needed for the animation to work.
