| DESIGN NAME: Full PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ballpoint Pen INSPIRATION: Full ballpoint pen and Empty card case (Design #89764, A' Design Award, 2019 – 2020, A' Art Materials, Stationery Supplies and Gift Items Design Award) are the same series of products, which continue the design language of "hollow out". UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design breaks the boundary between inside and outside, and the inner part supporting the writing function is integrated with the hand holding part through the hollow part. This is a fresh experience for users, who can clearly perceive the relationship between this inside and outside. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The opening shuttle shape of the penholder skillfully divides the interaction area between the finger and the pen body when holding. The weight of the pen is reduced to 19 grams, which effectively controls the weight. The hollow part in the middle can also prevent the pen from rolling when it lay flat. It is easy to hold and put down. The color of the refill can be learned intuitively through the ribbon of the refill. At the same time, we can see the inner movement of the refill when we rotate the tip of the pen. This is a fresh experience. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2017 in Beijing and finished in August 2017 in Beijing. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design of Full-pen display the industrial beauty. It is made of aerospace alloy material, and formed by CNC milling, surface blasting, oxidation and other process to create a complete. The design language is "Hollow Out".A slender hollow has been milled on the complete body, to show the Schneider metal Refill inside. The slender hollow is cleverly avoided the finger contact area to hold the pen, which find the balance between beauty and human engineering. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 15mm x Depth 15mm x Height 135mm，Weight 19 grams TAGS: hollow out, Industrial beauty, ballpen, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the digital age, there are fewer scenarios written with pens. Hand writing connects thinking and expression, and pen is the medium. At the beginning of the conception, the "Hollow Out" series explored the relationship between inside and outside. In addition to the function and appearance of the product, this inside and outside also contains the inner activities of the user and the true expression of the outside. Therefore, when doing this design, we used the metaphor of design to interpret these two relationships. After completing the design, we also invited the participants to participate in sensory and human-factor testing to evaluate the design elements such as the product's shape and mechanism. CHALLENGE: When designing this product, the major difficulty we encountered is to balance the expression of ergonomic factors and design concepts. Because of the “hollow out” design concept used in the pen holder, the size and shape of the interaction surface between the fingers and the pen need to be carefully considered to meet the needs of comfortable requirement.
