DESIGN NAME: Elytra
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Space Saver Coffee Table
INSPIRATION: In an unusually beautiful case of nature-inspired design, the Elytra table expands in size by spreading its wings! This coffee table is inspired from the kinesis and anatomy of the wings (elytra) of the beetle. Elytra’s design is dominated by rounded forms that give it a friendly, pet-like demeanor, and feature four legs that are positioned in a way that gives the Elytra its unique, animalistic stance.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Elytra is designed in a way that allows the user easy access to increase the table top surface because of its non-static nature. The biomimetic, dynamic table’s surfaces are split into four broad parts, including a wooden ‘head’ and ‘body’ as well as two glass-inlay wings that can be opened out simultaneously to expand the table’s surface to store an extra few cups of tea, a planter or two, and perhaps a notebook to doodle your ideas on!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The winged table, in closed postion, has 2 prominent surfaces for use (the head and the wings). When the table top space isn't sufficient, the edge of the wing can be pulled apart. This movement causes the other winged top to open up simultaneously giving the table a grander feel and more usable space to keep your extra cups or newspapers etc. Now there are four useable table tops , the head, two wings and the body, as inspired by the anatomy of the beetle. As and when this extra space is not required, one side of the wing can be pushed back inside to allign parallelly with the table top below the wings, or the body of the table. This smooth beetle like transformation of opening and closing wings is the key characteristic of this winged table: Elytra.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2019 and finished in May 2019 in Ahmedabad, India. It was first displayed in the Aquarium (Display Gallery) of the National Institute of Design in July 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: A concept driven design started off with intense doodling and sketching. Once it was finalised on paper, scaled down mockups , with the help of 3mm thk laser cut mdf parts, were made to figure out the kinetic mechanism. It was followed by cnc cutting teak wood and getting an absolute precise and finished product.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 450mm x 750mm x 475mm
(Width increases to 1180mm on opening the wings)
