| DESIGN NAME: Model One PRIMARY FUNCTION: DAB Internet Radio INSPIRATION: Wood has always been a true material bringing elegance and authenticity into the use environment. The main inspiration point in this project was to create a design which promotes the technology in an hidden way to keep the elegance high. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Model One is a DAB internet radio which blends the authenticity of wood material and the wireless charging for the mobile phone into a new unique design style. The wireless charging on top helps user to maintain long hours of enjoying the music and keep the radio in the center of life again. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: the control panel is located in the front. there is an OLED screen to show the functions and operated by 2 knobs and button combinations. There is a separated CD player located on the top of the front panel. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2019 and finished in March 2020 in Hong Kong. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Body is made of wood. This particular wood allows to increase the thickness of the cabinet to achieve a better sound. The control panel and back cover are made of ABS plastic. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 250 mm x Depth 200 mm x Height 100 mm TAGS: wood, radio, internet, audio, sound, wireless, charging, mobile phone RESEARCH ABSTRACT: DAB Internet Radio is a product with a specialised target user. During the research stage, first an email based online survey with the help of internet radio channels was conducted and the user personas are created accordingly. A further research is created by asking more design relevant questions with a more selected audience through online interviews. The feedbacks related to increasing visibility of the "wood feeling" in the front face and charging mobile devices while operating the radio were proved to be essential needs of the target user. CHALLENGE: Wooden radio is a very polluted market with many similar designs. the challenge in this project was to provide a unique style, while keeping the cabinet as wood. The proportions and visual balance between the wood and plastic was the real attention point during the design process.
