DESIGN NAME:
Huzhou Cultural and Sports Center
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Public Building
INSPIRATION:
Architects use "brush strokes" and "qiyun" as the design source points to capture the urban expression and emotions of Huzhou, using modern architectural language to express their expectations for the future.
It also includes attempts to express futuristic architectural design in the oriental context, and the use of large-scale architecture to express the artistic conception of small-scale traditional Chinese architecture
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
In order to hold the basketball, badminton and karate competitions of the Zhejiang Provincial Games in 2018, and to prepare a preparatory venue for the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2022, Huzhou City selected a grassy triangle island surrounded by water on the south side of the Wuxing District Government Building Venue to build new sports facilities.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In preparation for 2018 Zhejiang Provincial Games and 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games with competition venues, holding basketball, badminton and karate sports events, Huzhou city government decided to use the triangular island that surrounded by water and grass lawns in the south of Wuxing district government building as the site to build new sports facilities. At the beginning of this project, opinions of government decision-makers and the architects coincided: traditional single-function competitive sports venues were abandoned, and the idea of high-standard cultural and sports multiple functions commercial complex was emerged, which combining sports, fitness, theater, library, cultural center, urban exhibition hall, boutique hotel and waterfront business altogether.

The project started to design in May 2015
Completed construction and put into trial operation in November 2018

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
16 square meters of solar photovoltaic panels are installed on the south roof of the building. Alternating current after the inverter is used for powering the garage lighting and other common use, and excess electricity use is solved by "surplus electricity grid" application. Permeable materials are used for hard pavement on the ground. Rainwater infiltration garden and micro-ecological filter bed are integrated at several locations to collect and utilize rainwater.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
In the elevation design, we cooperate large amount of 3d surface and curves, which increase the project construction challenge. During the design development period, hyperboloid panels were rationalized, flatted and standardized by the designer, make each sets of single constructional details get repeated used and more efficient. We make use of algorithm design tool (rhino+ grasshopper) to optimize and position the size of the facade panel, and rely on the information building model (BIM) to extract the construction data from the digital information model, and help solving design collision among various construction professions.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Pure competition venues are disappearing, and the sports functions will be further "dissolved"; in the new business model formed by "sports +". We creative a collection of sports, fitness, theater, library, cultural center, urban exhibition hall, boutique hotel, waterfront shops.
Architects use "brush strokes" and "Calligraphy" as the design source responding to not only the city's history as the hometown of Chinese calligraphy brush, but also conception idea of Chinese traditional painting philosophy which is "mountains seems mountains , water seems water".
CHALLENGE:
The intervention of multi-functional operation scheme will make sports facilities and cultural supporting facilities formed an integrated unity, provide different strategies for flexible space use in various occasions. Single-function sports architecture in the urban context is gradually getting integrated with other culture developments, therefore single stadium architecture is being replaced. Sports function will further "dissolve" in the new format of sports building evolving from "sports +" architectural complex. Huzhou Wuxing District Cultural and Sports Center is being realized based on these proposals.
