| DESIGN NAME: New Hanoi Arts House PRIMARY FUNCTION: Public Artwork INSPIRATION: Based on the positive reviews by the people of Vietnam as well as art critiques around the world, Thu Thuy decided to expand and further develop her public artworks. But how could this be achieved? One idea was to transform every inch of an entire building into a public art exhibition house. All forms of public art needed thoughtful consideration, including murals, photos of Vietnamese landscapes and seascapes, as well as lacquer and oil paintings. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The New Hanoi Arts House reflects the murals, paintings and images of public artworks designed by Thu Thuy since 2006. Murals featuring flora and fauna are on the first two floors. Photography highlighting Thu Thuy’s past public artworks line the stairwell. A mirror room on the fifth floor, designed by Thu Thuy and Mike Savad combine graphic imagery with an iconic symbol of Vietnam. Even the outdoor balcony serves as a flower garden. Entrance is free of charge. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The New Hanoi Arts House is reviewing public art projects by Thu Thuy and her company over the past 10 years. This would hopefully inspire others to design and promote public artwork. The exhibits in the New Hanoi Arts House allow visitors to experience the impact of public ceramic murals and painted murals. The photography highlights the development of public arts projects and how they involve artists, private enterprise, schools, groups of citizens and government offices. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The New Hanoi Arts House project was initiated on July 19, 2019 in a five story building at 97 Nguyen Dinh Thi, Hanoi. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The five story building overlooking West Lake hosts art events and new creative projects by Thu Thuy. The first floor is decorated with murals painted with acrylic representing the signature flowers of the capital. On the second floor, Thu Thuy displays mini editions of her significant public artworks. The third and fourth floors are galleries featuring works by Vietnamese and foreign painters and photographers including lacquer and oil paintings by Thu Thuy. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: New Hanoi Arts house set up in the five-storey building overlooking West lake. Each floor is 50m2 divided in two rooms. The 3 murals in first floor are 4m long and 3.5m high . The Lotus room in second floor is 5m long and 4m wide. Thu Thuy and New Hanoi art artists painted the lotus on the wall and floor, sky with louds on the ceiling. The mirror room in fifth floor painted in black and white is 6m long and 5m wide. Being able to develop a deep appreciation for public art is rare in Vietnam, but Thu Thuy is breaking those barriers. New Hanoi Arts House goes behind the scenes and introduces the viewers to the process involved in creating highly valued and creative new approaches to public art. CHALLENGE: The challenge was to transform an entire building into a demonstration of public art, including floors, stairs and ceilings. This required a high level of creative energy to find the best style and technique. Which topics are suitable for the murals inside the building? What new look would attract visitors? What is the best way to set up an exhibition to promote public artworks? NAME: New Hanoi Arts Co.,Ltd PROFILE: New Hanoi Arts Co.,Ltd was established in October 2007 by visual artist Nguyen Thi Thu Thuy to accomplish the Public Arts projects for the city. From 2007 to 2010, Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts company completed the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mural, which won the Guinness World Record for the largest ceramic mosaic in the world and continues to hold this title. After the world famous HCMC project, Thu Thuy continued to develop other public arts projects throughout Vietnam and internationally. Her artwork can be seen in Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, Thanh Hoa, Truong Sa, Da Nang (Vietnam) and Choisy le Roi (France). In April 2018 Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts Company won a Silver A’Design Award for the Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Mirror House. In April 2019 Thu Thuy and New Hanoi Arts Company won a Golden A'Design Award for the Twin Lotus murals in Noi Bai International Airport. In June 2018 and 2019 Thu Thuy attended the Award ceremony sponsored by the A’Design Award in Como, Italy; photobook and posters displayed in the Exhibition of Design winners in the Museum of Design MOOD in Como. |
