DESIGN NAME: Yizheng Comprehensive Gymnasium
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sports Center
INSPIRATION: The lighting design respects the architects' concept that taking the "city's gift box" as a creative stating point and combining with the characteristics of the building, the project is designed as a crystal gift box, glittering from inside to outside at night.
Public communication spaces fully enjoy the natural light through the ceramic pillars, forming a relatively complete and open interior interface, which expresses a good vision of "a rising industry".
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The facade uses the construction method of fixed ceramic panels and the facade of the main building is made of carmine ceramic rods. It's an original construction method. After many times of meticulous 1:1 experiment, the construction technology integrates complex functions in a simple way, hence creating transparent effects of the curtain wall and a unique and warm image of gift box. However, the construction method poses challenges on lights arrangement and adjustment on site.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Illumination guidance and instinctual interaction
The designers added necessary safety lights at key corridors. Different from traditional indicative lighting, the designers smartly arranged brick lamps at the bottom of the pillars. In this way, the lights stimulate people to actively search for lights by calling upon their senses, realizing an instinctual interaction from "passive to active" and avoiding the unexpected glare.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started on January 20th, 2017 and finished on July 20th, 2018.
Address: Southeast corner, the intersection of Jian'an Road and Wenxing Road, Yizheng, Jiangsu

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The facade uses the construction method of fixed ceramic panels, which brings some challenges on lights arrangement and adjustment on site. Firstly, lights with warm color temperature are mainly used on the main building, offering people a comfortable and warm feeling. Then, the designers made detailed designs on some small parts. Designers adjusted many aspects like the place of lights, the projecting angle and direction so as to present glittering visual effects.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project is the landmark public sports facility in Yizheng with a total land area of 37,000 square meters. The facade of the building is made of tens of thousands of red ceramic rods in an orderly and interesting sequence. The lighting design follows the "City's gift box" concept, aiming to render the Gymnasium as a crystal box, glittering from inside to outside at night.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project is a multi-function gymnasium, serving as the venue for important competitions and physical exercise of the public. The designers considered how to use lighting to echo the artistic requirements of the main building at night, and how to create a brand-new and fashionable image, getting rid of the traditional symbol of the sports venue. Therefore, the main building uses lights with warm color temperature, to present a soft yet magnificent feeling while shaping a dynamic image.
CHALLENGE: The upright main building uses carmine ceramic rods as the material of the facade and its construction method is totally original. Therefore, after many times of meticulous 1:1 experiment, the construction technology integrates complex functions in a simple way. The biggest challenge of the lighting design is that it needs hundreds of times of adjusting on site to ensure the carmine color of ceramic rods and then flexibly install lamps according to the places of ceramic rods.
