DESIGN NAME: Tide and Stream
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Artistic Installation
INSPIRATION: Through years of the observation of the Pearl River tides, the designer discovered something interesting: the river water is cyan blue at high tide, and is mostly chartreuse at low tide. Cyan blue is the color of the sea while chartreuse is the color of upstream rivers. It seems to tell us the amusing phenomenon that when tides and streams converge, tides flow upward to the land and streams downward to the sea. Based on that, the design team created the artistic installation, Tide and Stream.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The upper transparent part represents "tide", standing for things brought to Guangzhou from other places. Colorful and dazzling elements are loved by young people. The lower metal part stands for "stream", representing indigenous things of the inland that are strong, rich, and meaningful. Characters we believe that carry the Cantonese culture and Guangzhou people's life attitude are displayed there in the form of movable type plates.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The designers used an artistically abstract way to express the phenomenon of tide upward and stream downward; tried to describe the similar scene where the Chinese and Western cultures collide in Guangzhou; and hoped to make visitors understand the inclusiveness of Guangzhou culture.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2019 and finished in December 2019 in Guangzhou.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The artist hoped the exquisite and gorgeous appearance could attract young people fond of contemporary art to appreciate the installation. They might discover what's in and behind the installation during the process of appreciation and finally get interested and think about it. The artist provided a trigger point for the audience to reflect on and think about traditional local culture, hoping more people to know about Guangzhou, an ancient and special city, from its developmental history to unique inclusiveness and to its particular role in world cultural exchange and integration.
CHALLENGE: Digital design method was applied for 3D modeling when designing the installation. Since the artist hoped it would be a building entity, structural calculation and incident light calculation were carried out during the design process. The space underneath the installation is the first overhead layer of the building. The streamlined metal shape can form flowing air at the bottom of the building, while allowing natural light to refract at the bottom of and inside the building.
