DESIGN NAME: Mediation
PRIMARY FUNCTION: House
INSPIRATION: This is an endeavor on an urban detached house located on a segmented lot of a residential area.
The location of this project is also a segmented area with a rapidly-progressing real estate development.
The designer aimed to build a detached house that reflects the characteristics of the land and the attributes of the owner by carefully incorporating only general methods without any complicated procedures while taking into account the market demand for economic rationality.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: To make the most of the natural benefits, such as the scenery of the park located at the front of the site, daylight and ventilation, and the social contact that represents a connection with the neighborhood, The designer installed a large opening in the form of a three-story window that faces the park, as a facility that mediates the park as a lush external space with the inside of the house.
This large opening serves as a mediator bestowing the natural benefits and contact with society to the house.

This large opening serves as a mediator that connects the inside and the outside environments, bestowing the natural benefits and contact with society to the house.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The living, dining, and kitchen (LDK) area is located on the second floor where the second story of the window is located. The third floor is for the children's room. Taking advantage of the high ceiling of the LDK area, giving a feeling of comfort by being inside a seemingly wider space of a compact house. In addition, a balcony is built on the third floor to be an opening for air coming from the large opening on the park side, maintaining the indoor thermal environment and air quality.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Taking into account the scenery from the park that spreads out in front of the house, the entire four sides of outer walls are made of solid Japanese cedar, and the gaps for warp stop show backside of the wood siding used. With this arrangement, the lightweight exterior wall that forms a delicate vertical lattice reduces the weight of the three-story building on the side of the park, whereas the grainy Japanese cedar boards blend well with the natural ambiance of the park.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This is an endeavor on an urban detached house located on a segmented lot of a residential area.
The aim of this project is to create a dwelling house with an opening that mediates the inside and outside areas to improve the livability of the house and promote the connection of the residents with the community.
The designer hopes that this project can become a part of an effort to consider the new universality of detached houses in segmented residential areas with various constraints.
CHALLENGE: Recently, housing developers often purchase and divide (segment) a stretch of land and sell pre-built houses side-by-side in urban areas due to the significant tendency of people returning to the city centers.
Houses built based on this scheme usually have 3 stories to minimize the land area required to build a dwelling and reduce the land acquisition cost. but the side-by-side pre-built houses tend to look similar regardless of the unique characteristics of the land and the owner.
