DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Didactics of Typography

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Scientific Monograph

INSPIRATION:
"Didactics of Typography. Teaching the Letter / Teaching with the Letter" is an attempt to present the methods and outcomes of teaching lettering and typography. The authors hope that it may serve as a springboard for a broader debate on the current state and future of the discipline, as well as the place of typography in contemporary design art. The volume contains outlines of various syllabuses, as well as presentations and discussions of teaching outcomes based on specific student projects.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The modest form of this scientific monograph contains a layout organizing articles with a diverse structure, all describing different teaching insights. It was necessary to place the Polish and English versions of the text in parallel, as well as many illustrations of student work and photos from the studios. The visual style of the publication was obtained by a monochrome color palette with orange accents, printed on the uncoated surface of a cream white paper.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
The book includes 12 illustrated chapters, 10 of which are related to different typographic studios. In order to facilitate navigation through the publication, the chapters have been separated by sections comprehensively presenting the most important information about the studios and the profiles of teachers. The text layout allows both to focus on reading the articles and to simultaneously have an overview on illustrations and diagrams relevant to particular issues. The narration is carried out by colour accents, drawing the reader's attention to the most important elements related to the topic.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2018 with a typographic conference in Cracow, Poland. The publication was issued in 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Soft cover with flaps, book printed in Pantone 021U and offset black, paper: Munken Pure 120, 300 g/m2 by Arctic Paper

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Format: 200 x 17 x 260 mm, 180 pages

TAGS:
Didactics, Learning, Teaching, Lettering, Typography, Calligraphy, Typeface, History, Fonts, Hand-lettering

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The project started with a conference, which aimed to exchange experiences related to teaching typography to art and design students. Afterwards, materials from the speakers were collected – their reflections, curriculums, student works, and conclusions concerning other speeches. The edition was supposed to correspond with the discourse – it was not meant to be a catalogue of students portfolios, but a notation of different insights, giving a holistic view on typography teaching in Poland.

CHALLENGE:
The design challenge was to find typographic and graphic solutions, that would both unify articles and illustrations within the publication, but also distinguish various elements like data, lists, schemes, and individual student work. To maintain bilingual narration, the text is set in two coordinated columns, with different width and font size.

Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, Poland

PROFILE:
Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow is the oldest artistic university in Poland. It was founded in 1818 and existed at the start as School of Drawing and Painting within the Department of Literature of Jagiellonian University (founded in 1364). After it became an independent unit in 1873 it assumed the name School of Fine Arts and its director at that time was a distinguished Polish historical painter, Jan Matejko (1838-1893), the present patron of the Academy. He contributed significantly into the formation of Kraków's artistic circle and had many distingushed disciples. The school has continued to develop its structure, teaching staff as well as the methods of instruction. It still remains faithful to its splendid tradition and at the same time is open to contemporary challenges and needs. Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow has been teaching artists for 180 years; among them are painters, sculptors, graphics, interior and industrial designers, stage designers and art conservators of high rank, thus contributing considerably to the creation of Polish culture and its promotion all over the world, wherever its numerous graduates or teachers and their work reach.
