| DESIGN NAME: Puro PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pet Care Robot INSPIRATION: Pet raising households are mostly consisted of single person households in South Korea. According to surveys and user research conducted internally, their major painpoints were 1. Leaving pets alone and 2. Bad Sanitation(odors & hairs). Thus, a multifunctional appliance that can allieviate psychological/physic UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The earlier ideation was just an enhanced version of a robotic cleaner specialized in cleaning pet hairs and dusts. However, developing the idea of this product, the designer found out more applicable usages in different electric sensors and parts(camera, gyroscopic sensor, IoT connectivity, vacuum cleaning motors, etc). Also, by adding a separate treat container that throws off treats to your pet, it also alleviates anxiety disorders and boredom while people are away from the house. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There are three modes of operation; Play Mode/Clean Mode/Air Purification Mode. When a pet is left alone, Play Mode is activated and it throws off treats to lead workouts. This alleviates anxiety disorder, a common symptom shown when pets feel loneliness. After the play, Clean Mode is activated to wipe out the crumbs made from the prior activity. As he/she takes a rest on a petbed-shaped station, the cleaner is connected and activates air purifier, taking in hairs and bad odors. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in September 2019 and finished in December 2019 in Seoul, Republic of Korea. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The cyclone motors taking in large amount of air doubled its usage not only in taking in dusts on floor, but also in taking in polluted air and animal hairs above ground. In order to achieve this, a purification filter was applied on the back of the charging station, so that the product can filter out polluted air while charging battery. Also, the camera and gyroscopic sensors that were used to map the floor can now detect the position of your pet to precisely throw off treats to the target. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Care Robot : 370 x 370 x 100mm Station : 500 x 700 x 150mm TAGS: Home Appliance, Care Robot, Robotic Cleaner, Air Purifier, Treat Dispenser RESEARCH ABSTRACT: User research and surveys were conducted as a team while designing a product was an individual project of the designer. It was conducted to find out what are the things that worries people the most while raising a pet. Reviewing the statistics offered by national institutions, they found out that the pet raising demographics were mainly composed of single houshold family. The team surveyed 80 different individuals and conducted in-depth interview of six different individuals representing different ethnic groups in pet raising single households. According to the result, single households' major painpoints regarding pets were situations where they have to leave pets alone, causing myriad of psychological and physical problems in pets and sanitation problems(odors & hairs) caused by their unique living conditions(small, unseparated living area). CHALLENGE: The task of this project was to develop a product that can solve problems in pet raising households, meeting the needs of both, pets and humans.
