DESIGN NAME: Shkrub House
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential
INSPIRATION: The Shkrub house appeared out of love and for love - a loving couple with three kids. The DNA of the house includes the structuring aesthetic principles that find inspiration in Japanese wisdom, as well as in Ukrainian history and culture.
The idea of paying homage, as a founding place, can be sensed throughout the home, like a delicate guiding thread.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The element of earth as a material makes itself felt in structural aspects of the home, such as the original thatched roof and in the beautiful and dense textured clay walls.
On the ground floor, the high point is the 6-meter high wall and the rustic display unit with a beautiful collection of ceramic artifacts from Trypillian culture, dating from 2-5 B.C.
The bedrooms on the second floor are filled with Kaws and art-toys DIDO by Serhii Makhno. Every wall in the head of tatami-bed is wrapped in beauty: handmade wallpaper, an allusion to a clay cliff, or a designer ceramic tile. Everything - unique. Made by one person for another.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Delicate and transparent is the concept of beauty that manifests itself in all the spaces of this house, which could be said to be the outcome of a journey back to one’s roots: seen in the elements, the architecture, and the objects.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2018 and finished in August 2019 in Kozyn, Kyiv region, Ukraine.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The element of earth as a material makes itself felt in structural aspects of the home, such as the original thatched roof and in the beautiful and dense textured clay walls.
The combination of these two elements, not only gives the home a cocoon-like atmosphere but also pays tribute to Ukrainian culture; the thatched roofs were one of the hallmarks of rural Ukrainian homes and the clay walls were made using ancestral artisanal techniques used in the construction of traditional huts.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Area: 370 square meters

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Serhii Makhno considers his journey to Japan to play a crucial role in the deep design cognition. The way that Japanese culture pays tribute to the beauty of its ancestral heritage, was like finding a special lens that gave him a different perception of the wealth of Ukrainian culture and the way it should be extolled
