| DESIGN NAME: Behind Glory PRIMARY FUNCTION: A Wugang Documentary INSPIRATION: Inspired by contemporary artists such as Anselm Kiefer and Sally Mann, this environmental health and pollution control community project documents the heavily polluted and decaying factory campus of Wugang with abstract, lyrical and somewhat somber images. This group of photography points out the price paid and the consequence behind the glory of modernization and economic prosperity in China, provoking the viewers into the search of a clean and healthy working and living environment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This is a photographic documentary of Wugang, the Wuhan Iron & Steel Co. Supported by the Russian and built in 1958, the state-owned Wugang is one of the biggest and most important steel factories in China, once signifying the industrialization & modernization of the country. However, such industry causes severe environmental pollution. Through capturing the heavily polluted campus with somber images, this community project reveals the price paid and the consequence behind the glory of economic prosperity. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: These photo documentary could be used for exhibition offline and online to make people aware of pollution and public health in the working and living environment. The design research points out the pollution and public health problem in the working and living environment; resulting the insights on price paid and the consequence behind the glory of modernization and economic prosperity. These images provoke the viewers into the search of a clean and healthy environment. CHALLENGE: It is very difficult to obtain permission to take photo of this state-owned steel factory. The condition of the photo site is poor and limited, often difficult to get to the ideal places to obtain the best photographic angle. NAME: University of Macau Centre for Arts and Design PROFILE: Established in 2018, Centre for Arts and Design (CAD) at the University of Macau focuses on education, research and service in the fields of art, design, digital media and new media.
