DESIGN NAME: Muji Hotel Beijing
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel
INSPIRATION: When the first Muji store opened in 1983, Japan started to enter the bubble economy. Muji was born as an antithesis for the situation and kept proposing essentially orientated product and lifestyle. In recent Beijing, people seek gorgeous life similar to the past Japan. The concept, “a simple, pleasant life” and “this is good enough” were conveyed through the design as this project was based on the belief expressing the important things that Muji has proposed.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The hotel has a gallery and a book lounge in order to be open to the local community. By using bamboo, bricks and wood which were scrapped from local Hutong area, the hotel space could harmonize with the atmosphere of neighborhood town. Natural materials were also selected to the guest rooms such as diatomaceous earth, hemp, cotton and stone, and their innate functions enhanced the quality of the space. Anyone who visit the hotel can fully enjoy the local history and culture, and Muji’s view of the world.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The hotel is open to the local community as well as hotel guests. This is why there is a cultural gallery where workshops can be held, and a book lounge with 8000 books covering the themes of clothing, food, housing, travel, education, and music at the hotel lobby. Furthermore, there is a bicycle rental service so that guests can enjoy the historical streets such as the Hutong area adjacent to the hotel.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in May 2016 and finished in June 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The 4th floor Muji Diner has a rooftop terrace overlooking Tiananmen Square where guest can enjoy the meal made with seasonal ingredients. The interior was designed to express the strength of materials by using materials such as plasterers.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: By minimizing the partitions in guest rooms and making the ceiling flat, the space became more spacious and comfortable to heal the guests’ tiredness of travelling. At the atrium connecting the basement Muji store to the hotel, Muji’s products were displayed in a full 17-meter high shelf. Guests can feel both the everyday feeling of Muji and the excitement of the hotel at the same time from them.
