| DESIGN NAME: Augusta PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dining Table INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the Augusta dining table was to celebrate a strong family bond. Through its name, the company Rice & Rice Fine Furniture honours this important bond and commitment. The business could not have been created if it wasn't for the support and inspiration of the family. The name Augusta carries a very significant meaning in the family. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Augusta dining table is a new interpretation of one of the classic dining table designs. Its traditional purpose of bringing family and loved ones together remains clearly visible whilst this table reinvents the concept of a 4-legged table. The table legs emerge from the ground as if they are growing from the same invisible root to hold up the book-matched tabletop in European walnut hardwood. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table is crafted by Master carpenters in Germany to ensure the high quality of the book-matched tabletop and the hand-sculpted legs. Book-matching high-quality woods has traditionally been reserved for high-quality antiques often in form of veneer. The Augusta dining table is made of solid European walnut to showcase the beauty of the tree's markings, such as in the book-matched solid wood tabletop. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The starting point of the design process was the image of a solid core or root from which new life was growing upwards. The initial drawings were very figurative around this motif. The main design step was to minimalize the concept to the point where the upwards theme remains visible whilst creating a clear and suggestive table design. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 2.0m (W) x 0.9m (D) x 0.75m (H) Made from European walnut hardwood. Tabletop planked and book-matched. TAGS: luxury, furniture, unique, design, dining table, craftsmanship RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research for this table comprised of selecting a type of wood that emphasises the meaning and inspiration behind this piece. The key aspect for the Augusta dining table is the family building a strong unit, rooted in the same core. European walnut represents this well. The Rice & Rice family comes from England and Germany, the wood was chosen from a tree popular in both regions without having a distinct association with either. The walnut tree also symbolizes wisdom and growth. Rice & Rice Fine Furniture believe that the wisdom of the generations before us allows us to grow strong to withstand storms and difficulties in life. CHALLENGE: The creative challenge of this piece was on how to reinvent the design of the traditional 4-legged rectangular dining table and have it carry the sense of an invisible core that enables growth. NAME: Rice & Rice Fine Furniture PROFILE: Miles J Rice set out to make timeless yet unexpected pieces of design furniture, created with honesty and appreciation for the material, the crafts and the design. Following in the footsteps of the artisan-craftsmen, Miles is a self-taught designer, whose mantra is: "You cannot teach passion." Taking inspiration from traditional designs and crafts, he is able to push far beyond these to create his very own visual language. This includes using pieces of wood, usually discarded for furniture making, allowing them to add their uniqueness to the designs to create pieces of forever furniture. |
