DESIGN NAME: Chengdu Dongmen Wharf
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Wharf Renovation
INSPIRATION: Based on the traditional architectural prototype in chengdu, the main building is implanted into the three-dimensional tile room space. While redefining the main building of the wharf, the scene of the wharf with black brick and tile houses and stilted buildings at that time is restored. Through the use of modern structure and materials, new LED transparent screen technology and dynamic projection image combination, a great extent to reproduce the prosperous scene of dongmen wharf.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Chengdu dongmen wharf, developed in the tang and song dynasties, was one of the five wharfs in chengdu at that time. However, in the last round of "old city renewal", the historic area was completely demolished and rebuilt. Today, only the shape of the wharf and the name of the wharf are left. The design task of this project is to reproduce the former elegance of dongmen wharf and the "life of poetry and wine" in chengdu.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: On the remains of the existing faintly visible wharf, the embryonic form of the existing wharf cultural space is formed through the recycling of the surrounding residential buildings. At the same time, the original wharf and its surrounding resources are integrated, and through the combination of the main building renovation, the reuse of the original wharf site and the river cruise ship project, a coherent, integral and sustainable situational wharf space is created, so as to make it a sustainable historical and cultural experience space in line with the modern city.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began in chengdu, China, in October 2018 and will be completed in June 2019.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lightweight steel structure and glass curtain wall became the main modeling materials for the renovation of the project, and a combination of transparent LED screen, projected image and dynamic lighting was used to reproduce the scene of millennium wharf changes, so that the whole building had a sense of historical immersion at night that was different from that of the day.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The project covers an area of 5,800 ㎡.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The project is to re-present a bustling memory and image of history on a largely lost site. To create a series of temporary or long-term sites for activities such as pleasure boats, dining, shopping, entertainment, art, etc., to activate and re-invest ancient urban infrastructure into the urban public domain.
CHALLENGE: How to renew and activate a historic wharf with a history of a thousand years and almost disappeared became the focus and challenge of this design. New materials and multimedia make immersive historical scenes possible, but it is necessary to find a proper balance between history and multimedia to better solve the problem of harmony between the two.
