The Courtyard Recreational Space by Nischal Abhaykumar

Home > Winners > Design #76233 >Interview
Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer Nischal Abhaykumar (NA) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of Nischal Abhaykumar by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design The Courtyard here.

Interview with Nischal Abhaykumar at Thursday 16th of May 2019

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NA: From design to execution, everything in 75 days.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NA: The client used to run the garden café with a small kitchen in the old residence. But she desired to convert this informal café into a community space for movie screenings and art events. They shared the idea with us over a casual conversation that evolved into a design brief – to optimise utilisation of the space and cater to a variety of art performances.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NA: The Art and design community.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NA: Redefining a space brings with it infinite perspectives – one that binds the various aspects with utmost practicality and utility. The Courtyard manages to create an arena of materials and finishes that not only resonate with the activities but also complement the purpose of the space.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NA: We won a national design competition in India called FOAID Architecture Ideas and the winning entry was sent further for this international design competition.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
