Interview with Chris Slabber at Thursday 26th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CS: The idea was to create different insects using elements from their environment and food they eat. I spent some time researching dirty homes and environments in order to identify each insect's characteristics. This gave enabled me to create the right tone of voice for each piece. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CS: Each insect had to look as real as possible. I wanted the viewer too cringe when looking at them. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? CS: The agency who commissioned me (TBWA Africa) will be entering the work to a few other awards in the advertising world. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CS: About 2 months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CS: I was briefed by the Agency/client. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? CS: This design was for a client of TBWA Africa FS: What made you design this particular type of work? CS: The brief. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? CS: I was directed by the creative director of TBWA Africa. Afterwards my work was given to their designers to apply the pieces to the different mediums. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CS: Home owners. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? CS: I think it has a lot to do with the hand made approach. Instead of just creating the work on the computer, I started building sculptures by hand and afterwards I retouched them digitally. This always gives work a very unique quality. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CS: It was supplied by the Client/ Agency FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? CS: My hands, Canon 5D, Photoshop FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CS: I'd say the hand made quality. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CS: TBWA Africa FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? CS: Too refine the final pieces. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? CS: As mentioned, I did a lot of research into each insect's habitat and what allows them to create their habitat. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? CS: The biggest challenge was to make the insects look real or alive. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CS: I felt really good about the quality of the final product. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? CS: Its the same thing as always, keep working until you find the solution. Every project has that one little thing you need to find that helps everything make sense. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? CS: Because I used garbage and rotten food to create the sculptures, I learned that vanilla essence helps with the smell. haha!
