FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
JL: The packaging design for donut have been coming from a box or with a snack bag, and usually it gets messy altogether. To find a solution, My inspiration was to design a packaging that contains one donut at a time, avoiding flavor mixed and easy to grab-and-go.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
JL: I want to focus on the product, which is donut.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
JL: Make specials for seasonal flavors, local ingredients, or holiday events.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
JL: Around 3 months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
JL: I decode to pursuit my inspiration.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
JL: I plan to produce or license it.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
JL: Daily observations.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
JL: Major focus on female customers between age 20-50.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
JL: It package one product time, and includes a for, and a plate in the packaging.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
JL: D One, means One Donut per packaging.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
JL: Eco-friendly materials. Mostly paper carton.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
JL: The experience between consumer and the product.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
JL: I had art direct the product. Andrea Malizia had assist me with the images.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
JL: Eco-friendly. Little waste of paper for the dieline.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
JL: According to statistic based on US Census and NHCS in 2016, 10 billion donuts are made a year in the USA, which is about 30 per person a year. Another data based on QuickBite magazine in the UK states that grab-and-go sector performing is still growing, and it reaches a growth rate of 5 percent in 2015. Because so many people are enjoying donut and grab-and-go is a trend, I had designed one donut per packaging. I also wanted to introduce a new way to eat donut and enhance the experience.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
JL: I want to create a modern and clean packaging design that focus more on the product, yet unique so it can differentiate what is already in the market. The challenge is to meet packaging functionality to contain product, its eco-friendliness on material, it’s grab-and-go convenience, and its aesthetic aspect. Keeping the objectives in mind, I created fun and stackable packaging with dodecagon shape, in addition to using recycled paper and saving space for dieline. The challenge lead me to surprising result.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
JL: A'Design is a world-wide competition, with a wide range of design categories.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
JL: I learned that more revisions and thoughts will better the design.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
