Interview with Nicola Zanetti at Friday 20th of September 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
NZ: Nature and magical atmosphere were the two main guidelines to follow, finding a shape that should be pure but not trivial.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
NZ: The magic effect of a "black box" that makes surprising things. Our target was to make the product in 3 parts only and keep away from competitors "vase" shapes.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
NZ: Promote it on magazines and fairs.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
NZ: firstly we moved on the research phase and sketches. The first phase took us at least 1 month, then the refining phase up to the pre-engineering, developed in different steps took around 3 weeks.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
NZ: The brief was given by the client. The need was a new outlook different from what was on the market andd additional features. We developed this concept and added the capacity touch button control.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
NZ: This product is already on the market with different brands, divided per country. The most famous is the german Leifheit

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
NZ: because this product is related to helthness of mind and soul, not just a food processor.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
NZ: No, this product was designed by myself, even if usually we work in team, sometimes a concept comes alone.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
NZ: we like to think this design can fit almost all customers taste. It is pure, new, related to nature but a bit technological too. Once you try it you will like to turn it on every evening.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
NZ: Many competitors use technological shapes that put the outlook in the field of appliances, some other use "japanese style" shapes, we tried to make a natural , modern outlook in line with modern houses and traditional souls.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
NZ: Magic stone is the synthesis of the magical use and ambient that you can create with essential oils and led lights and the classical shape of oriental tradition, the river stone.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
NZ: mind and soul. then I used pencil and Rhinoceros with Hypershot.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
NZ: modern pureness and easy of use.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
NZ: I worked with teh company engineer to match the design with technical needs.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
NZ: Technology has the main role, since this "under skin" magic is made thanks to technology

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
NZ: Basically what we do for all projects: benchmark of products on the market, competitor's product analisys, technology research to find something new to add to the new product.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
NZ: simplify it as much as I can...you know: less is more

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
NZ: Since I feel this is really something improoved step by step until a good level of design.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
NZ: to relax :)

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
