Veloso Residential Compound

The design proposal is residential compound in Nacala, a remote city in the northern part of Mozambique. The masterplan layout was carefully designed to allow undisturbed sea view to each unit while preserving complete privacy for their tenants. These parameters contributed to a joyful interplay between the houses creating a non-repetitive distribution of the units on site. The challenge of this project was to be able to design a prefabricated modular housing system that can be easily transported and assembled on site by unskilled labour coming from the site’s adjacent community.

Samer Chamoun comes from a background immersed in research and experimentation. His curiosity and passion for problem-solving matured into the studio’s current design process where every architect, designer, landscape architect and maker is encouraged to challenge and contribute ideas. His laboratory’s work emphasizes the importance of the formal expression in architecture, the integration with the environment and the use of digital tools as a platform of experimentation. Positive and pragmatic, the studio’s team are collaborators whose role is to listen, question, then lead the conception and construction of special and unusual places. Ingenuity and inspiration are used to make projects that are affordable and buildable and the best future projects are the ones that will teach us the most.
