The Cabin on a Rock perches precariously over a steep drop-off in New Hampshire‘s White Mountains, affording dramatic views across the valley below. The cantilevering structure is lifted on 9 hand-poured footings in order to tread lightly on the sloped site. The faceted geometry of the 85sm modern mountain retreat reflects the evolution of the young growing family for which it was designed - a form that is both elemental yet is in constant transformation. The cabin combines custom design with prefabrication technology to make a lasting connection between a unique site and its occupants.
I-Kanda Architects is an award-winning architectural design practice founded by Isamu & Marley Kanda, following graduation from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. The firm creates buildings and spaces that are modern, yet enduring – equal parts purpose and sculpture; broadly ranging from lofty barn conversions to Back Bay penthouses, boutique storefronts to mountain-side cabins. The firm approaches each project as a new array of needs and desires out of which to conceive uniquely enhanced environments. Their aim is to turn constraints into possibilities - to work with clients, builders and contexts to realize ideas far beyond anyone’s initial hopes.
