It was not until Ray invented his own “Yin and Yang”, or dark and bright, carving method did the public realize that jade can also be finely sculpted as luxury pieces of jewelry. Ray, the founder of MASTER MA and jade jewelry sculptor, started his art design and sculpturing of most famous jade - Hetian Jade since 2004. Jade is loosely understood in China as the collective name for most precious stones and has long been considered as objects of pure decoration. Though jade carving constitutes an important part of Chinese arts and crafts, not many thought as Ray did to turn it into a piece of jewelry. To many, wearing carved jade with a string hang up either on their necks or wrists is for good meanings. But for Ray, jade is more than that. Unlike traditional jade craftsman’s old school style just featuring everyday objects as the way they naturally are, Ray gives jade the new meaning –making each piece of jade a unique and exquisite artwork that can be easily worn according to its luster and material. Ray makes his own unique jewelry design favors by combining western jewelry such as colored diamonds with Chinese jewelry like jade and porcelain. He also adds Chinese traditional elements into western jewelry design ideas, turning Chinese ink painting, jade carving and other means of expression, and the Chinese taste into western jewelry designs.
Master Ma's Sculpture Art Studio, also known as MASTER MA, was founded by the international jewelry design and sculpture artist Ma Rui. Ma Rui is the third-generation inheritor of Xinjiang's intangible cultural heritage, a director of the Shenzhen Jewelry Designers Association, and a lecturer at the Xinjiang Hetian Jade Culture and Art Research Institute. In 2012, Ma Rui established the MASTER MA sculpture art jewelry brand, which quickly became famous in the jewelry industry for its unique design style. He created the "Yin-Yang Carving Method," integrating traditional Chinese philosophical thoughts and aesthetic styles into jewelry design, reflecting the natural law of the world where all things are opposite yet interconnected. Ma Rui's works break through the traditional two-dimensional craftsmanship, using three-dimensional techniques for 360-degree design and carving. The main stone often uses the warm Hetian jade, carved into a soft form, contrasting with the metal part, showing a sense of strength and tension. Ma Rui's studio not only focuses on the inheritance of traditional jade carving craftsmanship but also devotes itself to innovation through modern and international expressions. In recent years, the studio has shifted its focus to the combination of titanium metal and Hetian jade jewelry design, using a large amount of titanium alloy and 3D printing technology, combined with traditional Chinese Hetian jade carving and diamonds, inheriting the concept of Chinese intangible cultural heritage jade carving. Ma Rui has also become the first person in mainland China to use titanium metal in high-end jewelry. His works are not only recognized by the industry but also collected by many celebrities and socialites.
